📬 USPS Postmark Update for Tax Filings

The United States Postal Service clarified that postmarks may reflect when mail is processed—not when dropped off.

This can impact deadline-sensitive tax filings.

To prove your mailing date:
• Request a manual postmark at the counter
• Use Certified Mail or Certificate of Mailing
• Get a PVI label at the counter

Online/kiosk labels only show when postage was printed—not accepted.

📌 Best practice:
Mail early or use a method that provides proof of acceptance.

The Internal Revenue Service only accepts certain delivery services:

Tax Filing Deadline – April 15, 2026

This is the deadline to file and pay your 2025 federal tax return.

Quarterly estimated tax payments for Jan 1 – Mar 31 are also due on this date.

💡 Waiting on your refund?
You can check your status anytime using the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool:

• Updates are made once daily (overnight)
• E-filed returns: status typically within 24 hours
• Paper returns: take longer and are processed in order received

⚠️ Refund amount different than expected?
Your refund may have been applied to outstanding debts such as:
• Past-due federal taxes
• Student loans
• State taxes
• Other qualifying obligations

If this happens, the IRS will send a notice explaining the details and where the funds were applied.

⏰ “No Tax on Overtime” Deduction — What You Need to Know

The IRS has released additional guidance on the new “No Tax on Overtime” deduction created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).

Here’s what matters:

✔ You must be an FLSA overtime-eligible employee (Fair Labor Standards Act).
Most hourly and many full-time employees qualify — but some salaried employees do not. If you’re unsure, check with your employer.

✔ You must have a valid Social Security number (SSN) for U.S. employment.
✔ If married, you must file a joint tax return to claim the deduction.

⚠️ Important:
The deduction only applies to the “bonus” portion of overtime pay — the amount above your normal hourly rate.

Example:
If your regular pay is $20/hour and overtime is $30/hour (time-and-a-half), only the $10/hour difference may qualify as deductible overtime pay.

📝 Your 2025 W-2 may not clearly show qualifying overtime separately. You may need to log into your employer’s payroll portal or request documentation.

💡 Good news:
• You do not have to itemize deductions.
• Maximum deduction = $12,500
• Up to $25,000 for joint filers (if both spouses qualify)
• Phases out at $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint)

Not sure if you qualify? We can help determine eligibility and calculate the correct deduction amount.

📬 Tax Documents May Look Different This Filing Season

Tax season is here — and your tax documents might not arrive the way they used to.

Over the next 2–3 weeks, keep an eye out for important forms you’ll need to file a complete and accurate return, including:

• Form W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement)
• 1099 forms for interest, dividends, rental, royalty, or self-employment income

While these forms were traditionally mailed or handed out at work, many are now delivered digitally or posted in online portals. Be sure to check your email and any employer or financial institution login accounts so nothing gets missed.

⚠️ Important for 2026 Filers:
If you qualify for the new:
✔ “No Tax on Tips”
✔ “No Tax on Overtime”
✔ “No Tax on Car Loan Interest”
✔ Enhanced deduction for seniors

You may receive reporting in alternative formats this year. Some documents may not look like traditional tax forms, or you may need to log in online to retrieve the necessary figures.

To claim these deductions, you’ll need to file a newly released IRS form: Schedule 1-A. We can help gather the correct documentation, complete the new form properly, and file electronically so you receive your refund as quickly as possible.

If you have questions about what to bring in, reach out — we’re here to help.

Tax Filing Season Has Begun!

The IRS officially opened the 2026 tax filing season on January 26 and is now accepting returns for the 2025 tax year. Filing early can help reduce stress, avoid delays, and get refunds faster—most are issued within 21 days when you e-file and choose direct deposit.

Taxpayers claiming EITC or ACTC should expect refunds closer to early March, with tracking available through Where’s My Refund? starting February 21.

The filing deadline is April 15, 2026 — now is a great time to get started.

Multiple Tax Credits Expiring at the End of 2025

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), passed in July, sets end dates for several key tax credits. Knowing these changes can help you plan ahead for the upcoming filing season and beyond.

💡 Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit
Covers part of the cost for projects that reduce energy use — such as high-efficiency doors, windows, water heaters, and heat pumps.

🌞 Residential Clean Energy Credit
Available for homeowners who install solar panels, wind turbines, or other renewable energy systems — but only for installations completed by December 31, 2025.

💊 Premium Tax Credit (PTC)
Starting in 2026, the OBBBA reduces the PTC amount for Marketplace health insurance, meaning higher out-of-pocket premiums for many taxpayers.

👉 If you qualify for these credits in 2025, you can still claim them on your 2025 tax return.
