If your child is ages 16-18, has a job, and still lives with you - you are still supposed to claim them in most cases.

The ONLY time you don't claim them is if they provide OVER 50% of their own support.

Here’s what the IRS actually counts as support:
✅ Rent or mortgage
✅ Utilities
✅ Food
✅ Health insurance
✅ Household living expenses

🚫What does NOT count:
❌ Car note
❌ Car insurance
❌ Phone bill
❌ Spending money

So just because they work does NOT mean they support themselves.

When a child turns 17, you lose the Child Tax Credit. This means:
• Smaller refund
• Or possibly owing
• Even though you're still supporting them.

Parents with dependents who turned 17 in 2025, expect a change when you file. This is not a mistake. This is how the law works. Knowing this ahead of time helps you plan — not panic.

🗣️🗣️Timeline for EITC refunds
If the return was filed online, the taxpayer chose to receive their refund by direct deposit and there are no issues with the return, it’s anticipated that most refunds would be received by March 2, 2026.

By law, the IRS must wait until at least Feb. 21, 2026, to issue refunds to taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers can check Where’s My Refund for their personalized refund date but not before mid-February 👌🏽

Refund timing for early EITC/ACTC filers

Most early filing taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit can expect their refunds as early as March 2, 2026, if they:

File online.
Choose direct deposit.
Submit a complete and accurate return.
Have no issues with their return requiring an additional IRS review.

Check Where’s My Refund? on or about Feb. 21, 2026, for a personalized refund date. Some financial institutions may take extra time to make refunds available, and weekend or holiday delays may occur. You can also check with your financial institution if you believe the refund has been processed, but you still don’t see the funds in your bank account.

Taxpayers are responsible for all the information on the return, and any errors may delay processing.

Tax refunds and tax fee information you need to know.

If you do not have EITC or ACTC on your return, your refund is typically processed within 8 to 21 days.

If you do have EITC or ACTC, your refund will not be processed until after February 15. This is an IRS rule, not your tax office.

If you received a cash advance, remember this order:

The cash advance is taken off the top
Then tax prep fees are taken
You receive the remaining balance

Now let’s talk about fees coming out of your refund.

If you elected to have your fees taken out of your refund and you are also receiving a state refund, and your tax company selected for it to be deposited through a third-party tax bank, here’s what happens:

If your state refund comes before your federal, the bank will apply it to:

Your cash advance first

If no cash advance, then toward your fees

When your federal refund is released, your state and federal will be deposited together.

Important banking reminder:

If you chose to have your fees taken out of your refund, that is a bank service.

Your personal bank information is not listed on your tax return.

The third-party bank’s information is listed instead.

Your personal bank information is only on the third-party bank application.

So if you call the IRS and they say your bank account is not on the return, that is normal. No one is stealing your money.

If you paid your tax prep fees out of pocket, the third-party bank is not involved, and your refund comes directly from the IRS to your bank. In that case, make sure your bank information is correct.

One last thing about fees.

When you choose to have fees taken out of your refund, you are paying more than just the tax preparer. You are also paying:

The bank
The tax software company
Administrative and processing fees
Electronic filing

If you received a cash advance over $1K, you are also paying interest. For example, a $7,000 advance can carry fees of around $222 by itself.

Those fees do not all go to the tax pro.

Just a few friendly reminders!!

Tax Prep Fees—because before you file, you need to understand what you’re paying for.

When you go to a tax preparer, you’ll usually be given two options to pay for your tax prep:

1. Pay Upfront

This means you pay before your return is submitted to the IRS.
Most tax pros accept cash, credit/debit card, Cash App, Zelle, and even checks depending on their setup.

✅ This is usually the more affordable option because you’re just covering the tax prep fee and maybe one or two admin fees.

💡 It varies by company, but this method avoids extra processing fees.

2. Pay From Your Refund

This means your prep fee is taken out of your refund after it's issued.

Here’s how it really works:

🧾 Your tax preparer doesn’t touch your refund directly. Instead, a third-party bank handles the transaction. They collect the refund, pay your tax pro their fee, then send the rest to you.

But be aware:

💸 This option usually comes with more fees—not just the prep fee.

You’ll also pay fees to the bank, the software company, and any other service provider involved in your return (like audit protection, document storage, or refund advances).

📌 If your refund is intercepted (for example, by the IRS or child support), and the tax pro doesn’t get paid, you’re still responsible for covering their fee.

A Few More Things You Should Know:

• Tax prep fees are NOT based on your refund size. It doesn’t matter if you’re getting $100 or $10,000 back—you’re paying for a service, not a percentage.

• You pay even if you owe taxes
There’s still work involved in preparing your return, and that work deserves to be paid.

• Tax prep fees are for tax preparation ONLY—unless your preparer says otherwise

If you need help with tax planning, audit support, filling out a W-4, writing letters, or calling the IRS—those are additional services and may come with additional charges.

💡 The bottom line:

Know what you're paying for.
Ask your tax preparer upfront.
And make sure you're clear on what's included—and what’s not.
