BEFORE TAX SEASON STARTS, LET’S MAKE ONE THING VERY CLEAR

Your tax preparer does not hold your refund.
Your tax preparer does not approve your refund.
Your tax preparer does not decide when your refund gets released.
Your tax preparer cannot make the IRS process your return faster.

Once your return is filed, THE IRS HAS IT.

So if your refund is delayed, under review, adjusted, offset, or you receive a notice from the IRS…
THE IRS DID THAT. NOT YOUR TAX PREPARER.

Your preparer can explain what’s happening, provide assistance, and help you respond when necessary but they do not control the IRS.

PLEASE understand this BEFORE you file your taxes.
TAX PREPARER ≠ IRS.

Know the difference BEFORE tax season starts.

Michigan Treasury has confirmed that more than 100,000 taxpayers still had returns in the state’s processing queue. This does NOT mean those taxpayers did anything wrong, were audited, or were “caught” doing something fraudulent.

Michigan has been dealing with a large volume of returns and a transition to a new tax processing system. Some returns require additional review for things like identity verification, tax credits, missing/incorrect information, or other issues before Treasury can release the refund.

So if your Michigan refund is taking longer than expected, PLEASE DON'T PANIC. A delay does not automatically mean there is a problem with your return.
Michigan Treasury says nearly 90% of returns are processed and refunds issued within the normal 4–6 week timeframe, while some returns take longer because they require additional review.
If you filed your Michigan return and you're still waiting, check your status through Michigan Treasury eServices/Where's My Refund before assuming something is wrong.

And PLEASE be patient with your tax preparer.

We don't control Michigan Treasury's processing time. Once your return has been accepted, the state controls the processing and release of your Michigan refund.
