My time in Washington, DC came to a close yesterday. As my term as Government Relations Committee Chair of NAEA comes to a close very soon, I need to thank you all for allowing me the time to serve my profession and raise my voice in support of you.
I’m sharing a few photos of my opportunities of this week. Please read the captions for my usual snarky commentary.

I am currently in Washington DC attending meetings and being a voice for my profession and my clients.

Nothing says welcome like having your email account hacked straight away upon arrival! I think we’re fine for now, but after 25 years, our email address will be changing.
As a reminder, when we say don’t send us sensitive information through email, this is why. Our provider caught it and shut my account down immediately but someone is still trying to get into my facebook account today.

We are done with the heaviest lifting of tax season. The hardest part of surviving another season is knowing that I might not ever see some of these folks again. None of us have guarantees that tomorrow will come. That reality has slapped me in the face pretty hard this week. Don’t ever think that you are “just a client” here. Relationships matter.

We will require TWO mental health days this year! See you Monday April 20th at 9 am, except for Dani. She has Dr appointments in Sioux Falls Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It’s a crap shoot as to what time it will be when she walks in like she owns the place. Oh wait……

If you are in the oh s**t category, there’s not much we can do to help you except say good luck! We are not taking on any new stuff currently because we are at capacity.

We have a great group of clients that we trust to provide us accurate information, are eager to take our professional advice (I wouldn’t trust our dating advice) and you all make this job worth doing. You provide challenging situations, we work through them together, and hopefully find a satisfactory solution.

I feel every one of the 35 years some of us have been together, and never in a million years would I think that a punishment for quitting basketball (working here was considered punishment) would turn into a career choice for our youngest son. Can you think of anything worse than working side by side with your mother every day 🤷🏻‍♀️!!? Now that’s punishment 🤣🤣 But, Tate’s technology know-how, organization skills and tax knowledge have made him my right hand man.

April 15 we will be working on the final two or three extensions and then we’re taking a breath. A deep breath. We’ve earned it.

Accurate.

We will be doing a lot of phone contact Monday. So much that we dug up some more staff members to come in.

Here’s what’s up this week:
On Monday, we will continue helping clients learn how to do online tax payment. From 9 am to 4 pm, stop in anytime and we’ll get you started. You need to bring your tax return folder and the routing and account numbers of the bank account you’ll be using.

To give you review time, we need all completed returns out the door by Tuesday. We’ve been sitting on some of these for over a month.

Thanks to a late arriving K-1 from a certain Minnesota Soybean Processor, we’re filing more extensions than any other year before. Not our fault, not your fault, but we can prepare for it. You folks will be getting calls on Monday explaining how we move forward.

If you have had your tax return out for some time and we haven’t received signatures back, you will be getting called as well. We can’t file without your signature on the tax return.

If we haven’t seen you yet this year, and you want us to file an extension for you, we WILL NOT automatically do that. You will need to make arrangements with us or another firm to get that done for you.

Stay tuned for more funny stuff later this week!

In speaking with office personnel at MnSP a couple days ago, they shared that the K-1 forms their shareholders need to file their tax returns will not be delivered until Mid-May at the earliest. Shareholders should have received a letter yesterday or today from MnSP with the details of this announcement.

So that leaves several of you that will not be able to file a complete return next week. You all will go on extension on the 14th along with other people who are missing information or not back from their winter down south.

If you need to send payment to the IRS to avoid underpayment penalties, we will contact you with that information.

Some of you will have a first quarter 2026 estimate due as well, even though your 2025 return isn’t finalized. You will be contacted when we have your payment information ready, on Monday in most cases.

We have never extended this many returns before-ever. It is adding extra work and getting things accomplished is taking longer than normal for us; please be kind and remember we didn’t choose this either. Staff is fairly well burned out and tired and needs a break as it is.

A reminder for those who would like assistance in making your payments online: We will happily give you a tutorial on Friday and Monday, April 10 and 13 between 10 and 4:00 pm. No appointment is necessary and you must bring your payment account information and your payment vouchers.

Almost there folks! We have had several calls a day from folks requesting our services; we are not taking on any new clients for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for reading to the end and since you did, we’ll give you an early heads up that our first newsletter of the year will be out on the 25th.

A Presidential Executive Order has instructed the federal government to receive all payments and send all payments electronically. What this means for you is that your refunds will be all direct deposit and your payments to IRS need to be electronic as well. This also means that all of your quarterly estimates must be done online this year, as well as any future payments to IRS.

We understand how scary and frustrating this is for some of you. To help you become familiar with this, we will be holding electronic payment clinics in our office on FRIDAY APRIL 10th and MONDAY APRIL 13th for clients who would like us to walk them through the process. Please come in from 10 am to 5 pm with your banking information, your 2024 tax return and payment voucher for the tax you’d like to be paid and we will walk you through the process using our computers. No appointment is necessary but please respect the privacy of others who may be participating.
