The IRS has announced a mid-year increase to the optional standard mileage rates effective July 1, 2026.

Here's what changed:

🚗 Business: 76.0¢ per mile
🏥 Medical/Moving: 23.5¢ per mile
❤️ Charitable: 14.0¢ per mile (unchanged)

One important reminder: 2026 is now a split-rate year.

Mileage reimbursements must be based on when the miles were driven—not when the reimbursement is paid.

For example:
✔️ Miles driven before July 1 use the 72.5¢ rate.
✔️ Miles driven on or after July 1 use the 76.0¢ rate—even if both reimbursements are processed in the same payroll cycle.

For employers, payroll teams, and business owners, now is a great time to review your reimbursement policies and payroll processes. Applying the wrong mileage rate could result in taxable wages and unnecessary payroll tax issues.
