My first thought when I get a text like this from a small business owner?

THANK YOUUUU for letting me know! πŸ™

Because you texted me, I can make a note in your file of the exact date your personal charge happened.

Then, when I go to do your bookkeeping next month, I don't have to bother asking you about that random Whole Foods expense... πŸ₯–

I already know that it needs to be reclassified!

Don't panic if you accidentally put a personal expense on your business card (or vice versa), just let me know so I can make sure everything gets recorded correctly. πŸ“š

If you look up the definition of "adulting" in the dictionary, it definitely says something along the lines of: people who tax plan in the summer instead of next April. 😏

Summer is the perfect time to review:

β†’ what you've made so far this year + what you're projected to owe

β†’ whether you're optimizing for all of the tax deductions + credits you qualify for

β†’ retirement savings options

β†’ if you're staying compliant (federal, state, and locally!)

If you sell taxable goods or services (something you need to check in ALL the states you do business in, btw), this post is for you! 🫡

That money you collect as sales tax on each sale isn't actually money you've earned.

It needs to get remitted back to your tax authority at some point, so you don't want to treat it the same as your income.

Usually, the best treatment is to record the sales tax you collect as a current liability!

If you're not sure how to do this in your own bookkeeping, let's talk. That's what I'm here for!

This may sound crazy coming from a CPA, but your tax return isn't *just* for the IRS.

As a small business owner, your tax return can be used by mortgage lenders, landlords, and banks to determine whether you can afford to pay for what you're applying for (like a house or business line of credit). 🏑

My point: business deductions reduce your tax bill, but they can also reduce the income that your business shows on paper. πŸ“‰

So, if you're planning to borrow money, you want to be strategic with your spending!

Depending on your goals, you may need to balance maximizing your write-offs and still showing a certain level of income. βš–οΈ

That's why working with a CPA who understands the big picture for small business owners is SO important!

One minute you're tracking everything in spreadsheets and feeling like you've got everything under control...

The next? You've got states hitting you up for sales tax, payment processing fees to deal with, and a QuickBooks file that's seen better days. πŸ₯΄

Swipe to see how I'd recommend setting your [your niche] business up for success, whether you're making $1k/month or $100k!

P.S.If you're reading this and realizing you need more support, let's talk!

Not only can I help you with bookkeeping, but I can also connect you with other financial professionals who specialize in helping small business owners grow. πŸ“ˆ

I know you don't want to deal with all the paperwork + red tape that comes with hiring. Truly, I get it!

But a new team member isn't magically a contractor just because you call them that (or even if you have them sign a contractor agreement).

The Department of Labor is pretty strict on the distinction between contractor and employee! πŸ”

If you're controlling how, when, or where someone works, providing them with tools + equipment, and they're doing work that's a regular part of your business... congrats, you might just have an employee! πŸ₯‡

Ignoring these "employee" flags and continuing to pay someone as a contractor doesn't make the problem go away.

You're just creating a way bigger problem for the future! 🫠

If you're hiring your first employee (or contractor) and want to make sure you're doing everything right from a tax compliance standpoint, I can help!

For small business owners who want to work less and earn more, the answer isn't always trying to fit more clients into your already booked-out calendar.

In my humble opinion (as a bookkeeper who works with successful business owners every day), it looks more like:

β†’ Knowing which services/products have the best margins

β†’ Automating any and every repeatable process in your business that you can

β†’ Understanding which marketing channels are actually bringing in the $$$ paying clients

β†’ Outsourcing when it costs you more in time + money to do a task yourself

β†’ Having clients who tell everyone they know about your business because of your insanely good customer experience

Sometimes being choosier with clients, tightening up workflows, and knowing your numbers is all you need to level up your small business. πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈ

Everyone wants to know their next big shiny tax deduction (and trust me, I want to find those for you as much as you do).

But, there's something else small business owners overlook that can have a BIG impact on your taxes:

✨ ENTITY STRUCTURE ✨

When you reach a certain level of profit, it's time to have a conversation with your CPA about whether an S corp is right for your business.

S corps aren't a magical tax hack...

But they can help you save on self-employment tax by splitting your income between W-2 wages and distributions!

Before you check that S election box, just know that electing to be taxed as an S corp can come with drawbacks, too. Like needing to run payroll, potentially additional tax filings, and more admin work.

Ready to have that "is an S corp right for my small business" convo? Hit me up! πŸ“²

πŸ—žοΈ NEWSFLASH πŸ—žοΈ

Doing your bookkeeping this summer is optional...

At least for small business owners who hire me! 🀭

Spending my summer deep in your books is literally my idea of a good time.

If you're a small business owner who'd rather do literally anything other than reconcile your accounts, I conveniently have a few monthly bookkeeping spots open for July.
