BEWARE!!! There is a potential scam that a number of clients have had happen to them (but fortunately they called me first). A caller claims to be from the IRS, are told they owe money and it must be paid promptly through pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of their business or drivers licenses.

The IRS does not call or email taxpayers blindly (and certainly not through an area code 917 cell phone!). Any initial tax issues are always sent by the IRS in writing. Any questions, please check with your tax professional first.

Tax returns can finally get e-filed! We can thank our "awesome" men and women in Congress for sitting on their asses, waiting until the last possible day of the year to decide to either pass, deny or extend certain tax laws. This is what caused the delay with the IRS. Now we can start filing!

Happy New Year! There is a great article that I would like to share with you. It is the February 2013 issue of Consumer Reports entitled "7 Money Stumbles to Avoid". Real common sense stuff that can easily fall through the cracks. Please check it out.

My first tip is more of a common sense tip. Be careful of what you hear and see from the general media when it comes to taxes. I find that generally when one reads something about taxes in a general everyday newspaper or one sees something on TV about taxes, the consumer is generally not getting the full picture about whether a certain expense is deductible or not. In other words, one can get misinformed very quickly.

Be very careful when comparing ones "tax refund" to a refund received by a friend or other family member! No two tax returns are alike, it is like comparing apples to oranges. It always best to speak to your professional to determine how certain events that have occured in your financial life apply to your taxes.

Thanks for reading! BB
