This past weekend, I prepared a tax return for a new client with a typical circumstance. On Monday, after we filed the return, they surprisingly received a 1099-K from eBay for selling household items in excess of $600 (the new 2022 threshold for receiving a 1099-k lowered from $20,000). The IRS position on “garage sale” income is that as long as you sell items for less than you paid for it, you don’t have to report the income. This change in law now puts a burden on companies like eBay, tax payers and tax Practitioners and is counter productive at best. If you happened to receive more than $600 from customers through EBay, Etsy, poshmark, please look out for a 1099-K this year. Our office will do our best to reduce the taxable income as best we can and possibly reduce to zero income.
