IMO: It's double-checking that you're tracking your mileage (the right way). πŸš—

You don't want to be recreating records from old texts + your Google Calendar in December...

Getting a tracking app, like MileIQ, is worth the fee!

It automatically tracks your miles, plus you can mark whether your trip was for business or personal.

Don't wait til your accountant asks for your mileage log next April; start tracking things right today!

This is gonna surprise you...

The number one reason veterinary & equine industry entrepreneurs hire me is NOT because they don't know how to do their bookkeeping. πŸ™…

It might not be right up their alley, but they can definitely figure out the bookkeeping basics.

The *real* reason they hire me?

I hear it over and over again:

"I don't want to spend my verrrry limited free time doing my bookkeeping."

Even though bookkeeping might not be the best use of YOUR time, that doesn't mean it's not super important for your business!

It just means you shouldn't be the one doing it (just leave it to someone like little ol' me). πŸ“š

Here's the 4 things you need to do if you forgot to extend (and file) your tax return:

β†’ File your return ASAP.

This sounds kinda self-explanatory, but the sooner you file, the more you can minimize your late filing penalties.

β†’ Pay what you can, even if it's not the full amount.

Paying a portion of your tax bill is better than paying nothing at all from a penalties perspective.

β†’ Set up a payment plan (if needed).

If you're struggling to pay your tax bill, you might be able to work something out with the IRS if you're otherwise in good standing.

β†’ Ask about penalty relief.

If it's your first time running into penalties, you may qualify for a First Time abate. It could also be worth looking into a reasonable cause relief in the right situation.

Planes, trains, and automobiles (and a whole bunch of receipts you need to keep) if you traveled for work this spring ↓

🧾 Flights, train tickets, ride shares, or rental cars

🧾 Hotels, AirBnbs, Vrbos

🧾 Parking + tolls

🧾 Meals (while traveling)

🧾 Conference fees or tickets

🧾 Plane WiFi

Basically, when in doubt, save your receipts, and I'll let you know which ones will help lower your tax bill.

Not all accountants are experts in the equine and veterinary industries... but I am! πŸ‘‹

If you winced when you got your tax bill this year, and you know there *has* to be a better way, we need to talk.

Veterinary & Equine Industry entrepreneurs have verrry specific tax opportunities that a one-size-fits-all accountants might not know. Lucky for you, I do! 😏

A lot of taxpayers hear about the G wagon write-off and follow this logic ↓

heavy vehicle β†’ depreciation β†’ lower taxes

And yes, that can be true, within limits.

But what you're forgetting to plan for is what happens when it comes time to *sell* your G wagon. It's more than just what you paid vs. what you sold it for!

That depreciation you took advantage of in the past can get recaptured and taxed as ordinary income! πŸ’Έ

Is it worth it? That's a question for you (and your tax accountant)!

I know there's a veterinary or equine industry entrepreneur out there right now who's deciding business decisions based on vibes + gut feelings...

I won't stop posting until they find this page and realize how much more SUCCESSFUL they could be if they truly understood what was going on with their finances.

Getting audited does NOT always mean you're doing something sketchy!

Sometimes, the IRS just wants more information on what you reported on your tax return. 🀷

But a few things that *will* flag in their system are when your income reported doesn't match the 1099s filed, claiming high deductions that don't align with those of other, similar taxpayers, and reporting business losses year after year.

These might be totally legit, but you want to make sure you have the receipts, records, and clean bookkeeping to prove it!

So you're telling me you've been Googling accounting questions all these years when you could've just texted an *actual* accountant?

I'm here for you, ask me tax or bookkeeping questions anytime. I'm a nerd, I truly love helping veterinary & equine industry entrepreneurs understand this stuff.
