To all visitors of this page, please be aware there is a scam circulation, and it goes like this: You will be contacted by email with an offer to pay you $500.00 per week to have your car "Wrapped" by an advertising company representing REDBULL. You will be sent a check for $2,500.00 with instructions to deposit the check, and the next day, when your bank makes the funds available, withdraw the $2,500.00, keep $500.00 for yourself, and send the remaining $2,000.00 to a representative who will arrange to have your car wrapped.

Problem is this, the check is no good. The check might be issued by "Garden City Group. LLC" from Lake Success, NY. Drawn on their account with Signature Bank in Garden City, NY.

It typically takes a week or more for a bank to absolutely know that a check deposited is bad. In the interim, your bank has made the funds available to you, you have withdrawn the money, spent your $500.00 and mailed the $2,000.00. At that point you are on the hook for the $2,500.00.

PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM !!

The numbers are in. In Burlington County the 2014 "Toys for Tots" campaign was able to help roughly 15,000 children have a Merry Christmas. That's a 12% increase over last year! Plus 15% more toys were collected than the prior year!. Great job, and a hearty "WEL DONE" to everyone and a very special thank you to those who contributed and made this year such a great success. Semper Fi, and Carry on!

Things to Consider in Choosing your Tax Preparer

As the holiday season comes to a close, we all need to take a second and consider what happens on 01/01/15 when we all wake up 20 pounds heavier in the belly and 20 pounds lighter in the wallet. Oh, if only it was the reverse!

At that time we start pondering, first, how do I lose the weight, and secondly, how do I pay off Christmas? At 1040quick we can’t help with the weight issue, I’m still working on that problem myself, but we can certainly help with the money issue. Consider these facts, from a national survey of tax practitioners, that was conducted by the National Society of Accountants for the tax year ended 2013:
Of the approximate 1,600 respondents, the typical tax preparer:

1 Has been practicing for 26.5 years
2 Has a least a 4-year college education
3 Is a sole proprietor
4 Is an Enrolled Agent, and
5 Belongs to a State or Local Tax Accounting Society.

By comparison, the owner of 1040quick:

1. Has been practicing for 40 years, exclusively in taxes
2. Has not only a 4 year degree, but also a Master’s
Degree in Taxation
3. Operates through a professional corporation
4. Is a CPA, and
5. Belongs to the American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants.

Nationally, less than 31% of practitioner’s hold a post graduate degree, less than 26% are CPA’s, less than 5.5% operate through a Professional Corp., and only 15% belong to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Average fees charged by practitioners in the Mid-Atlantic region for preparation of various tax returns are as follows:
Form 1120…………………………………………………………759.00
Form 1120S………………...…………………………………….717.00
Form 1065…………….…...……………………………………..556.00
Form 1041………………...………………………………………468.00
Form 1040 (Itemized)……..……………………………………..246.00
Form 1040 (Sch. C)………..…………………………………….205.00
Form 1040 (Sch. F)……….……………………………………..185.00
Form 1040 (Sch. E)………………………..…………………….155.00
Form 1040 (not itemized)…………..…………………………..145.00
The above fees have also been adjusted to a medium sized market. The fees charged by 1040Quick for preparation of 2014 federal and state income tax returns will be reflective of the fees listed above. However, we do not charge for electronic filing. Nor will we charge an additional fee for expediting your refund and printing your refund check here in our office.

Please feel free to call to call if you have any questions, or if we can be of help.

Tax Changes Coming in 2015
Just in the nick of time, as 2014 winds down, the Senate recently extended several tax provisions – including mortgage debt forgiveness and credits for energy-efficient home improvements – that had expired at the end of last year.

Those extensions will apply retroactively, but it's unclear whether taxpayers will be able to claim them beyond 2014, which makes it challenging for taxpayers (and their accountants or tax preparers) to plan ahead. "Consumers don't know what to do," says Paul Gevertzman, a tax partner in accounting firm Anchin, Block & Anchin in New York City. "Should I make this purchase? Is it going to be deductible? Should I wait until they've changed the law? It hampers people from making these decisions."

However, the IRS has announced a few other small changes to the tax code going forward that you can plan on. Here's a look at what you need to know.

Inflation adjustments. In October, the IRS announced several tax benefits that will increase next year due to inflation. The maximum Earned Income Tax Credit amount will be $6,242 for those filing jointly who have three or more qualifying children, up from $6,143 in 2014. The personal exemption will rise to $4,000, up from the 2014 exemption of $3,950, but that exemption phases out at higher income levels (beginning at $258,250 for single taxpayers or $309,900 for married couples filing jointly and phasing out completely at $380,750 for single taxpayers or $432,400 for married couples filing jointly).

All of a child’s unearned income (for instance, interest or dividends) above $2,100 will be taxed at the parent’s tax rate, up from $2,000 in 2014. However, The annual gift tax exclusion remains at $14,000 per person.

Retirement. The IRS has increased the contribution limit for 401(k) and similar plans from $17,500 to $18,000 for 2015. The catch-up contribution limit for those age 50 and over will also increase $500, from $5,500 to $6,000. While the 401(k) contribution limit has been gradually rising the past few years, the catch-up contribution limit had remained at $5,500 for the past several years.

An extra $500 in a retirement account may not seem like much, but saving that amount over 25 years, assuming an 8 percent annual return, could yield an extra quarter million dollars in your retirement portfolio, points out Kimberly Foss, certified financial planner and founder and president of Empyrion Wealth Management in Roseville, California. "In one year's time, people just discard [the opportunity to save more]," she says. "But it does make a difference, especially in those critical compounding years between 40 and 65."

Starting in 2015, the IRS will also limit nontaxable IRA rollovers to one every 12 months regardless of how many individual retirement accounts you have. In the past, people with multiple IRAs would take advantage of a provision allowing them to withdraw money, and put it back within 60 days without the tax hit of an early distribution. By rolling money from one IRA to another, they could essentially give themselves a short-term loan because the money was held in separate accounts. "If you had a fair amount of IRA funds and you didn't care about the paperwork, you could set up multiple IRAs and do multiple loans per year," says Robert Zeigen, tax director at professional services company CBIZ MHM in Florida. "That was pretty common." Note that trustee-to-trustee transfers between IRAs and rollovers from traditional to Roth IRAs are not limited.

Health care. Under the Affordable Care Act, the penalty for not having health insurance increases from $95 per adult (or 1 percent of income, whichever is greater) in 2014 to $325 per adult (or 2 percent of income) in 2015. If you're enrolled in health insurance through the federal marketplace, you can renew your current plan or choose a new one through Feb. 15, 2015, although some states have different deadlines for their own marketplaces.

Other changes apply to flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts. As of 2015, employees can save $2,550 in an FSA, up from $2,500. Previously, FSAs had a "use it or lose it" rule that forced employees to use up funds for eligible medical expenses before Dec. 31 (or in some cases, during a spring grace period) or forfeit that money.

Earlier this year, the IRS announced that employers could now allow employees to carry over up to $500 from one year's FSA into the next. But if you're also using an HSA, then you can't also take advantage of the FSA carry over provision. Gevertzman says an HSA is better than an FSA for most people because it has higher contribution limits (up to $3,350 for individuals or $6,650 for a family in 2015) and greater flexibility. "It's almost like a retirement plan because you don't use it or lose it," he says. "Whatever you don't spend gets carried forward, and you can earn income that gets tax deferred."

Just a short not to all clients and friends of the firm. I had two clients in my office this morning, both in a panic over phone calls they received from the IRS. Let me reassure everyone, that making threatening phone calls is not the way the IRS conducts themselves.
If you happen to be in a situation where you do owe the IRS money, the IRS will communicate with you in writing, NUMERIOUS times before the will ever call you. The phone calls that people are receiving, are a SCAM… Let me reemphasis that; it is a SCAM!!
If you happen to receive one of these phone calls; Do not provide any personal information, IMMEDIATELY hang up on the person and call me, or simply refer the caller to me. It is perfectly acceptable for you to give them my phone number, I will take care of it.
There is also a press release by the IRS relating to this issue. Please visit http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Scam-Phone-Calls-Continue;-IRS-Identifies-Five-Easy-Ways-to-Spot-Suspicious-Calls .

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service issued a consumer alert today providing taxpayers with additional tips to protect themselves from telephone scam artists calling and pretending to be with the IRS.

I was truly honored last evening to have been invited to have dinner with the Lions Club of Deptford, NJ. Each year the Lions Club of Deptford supports the annual Toys for Tots campaign sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserve and The Marine Corps League. Last evening was no exception. The Club provided numerous unwrapped new toys for the kids. My good friend Bob Freidel attended the dinner along with his sister Donna Freidel, Jim Bernordo and his wife Betty, Jim Chapive and wife Sandy, Bob Kleinot, Linda McCrea, Angie Carney, Walt Porter, Barbara Murphy and JoAnn Brunn. A more generous and caring group would be very difficult to find. My sincere thanks to all.

Medford Village Toys for Tots Drive

James Ewen, founder of Jim’s Jarhead Jerky, and C. Michael Rainbolt, 1040Quick, both U.S. Marine Corps Veterans and members of Marine Corps League Detachment No. 695, in Burlington, are pleased to announce the annual Toys for Tots drive in Medford Village is underway.

Let’s make 2014 another successful year for “Toys for Tots” in Burlington County. One of the major goals of Toys for Tots is to “unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection”. Last year Medford proved that could become a reality; the response to the campaign was overwhelming and we are hoping to exceed the effort this year. As Bill Wilson, the Burlington County coordinator for the “Toys for Tots” National Foundation reminded us last year, “While you may never see the joy on the faces or the pleasure in the eyes of the children who are recipients of your generosity, you can be assured your charity toward a child will never go unrewarded.”

We are ready to accept your new, unwrapped toy donations at 1040Quick, 2 N. Main Street, Braddock’s Tavern, LuLu’s on Main, at the Post Office on Stokes Rd., My Girlfriends on Main, Otts Tavern and many other locations throughout Medford Village. In addition, like last year, we are scheduled to have 7ton USMC truck as well as uniformed Marines collecting toys during the Dickens Festival on 12/06. The Marines and the truck will be located at the corner of Main and Unions streets.

Marine Corps League Detachment No. 695 collects toys every year for children throughout Burlington County. Last year, the Detachment collected over 41,000 toys and was able to brighten Christmas morning for over 15,000 children in Burlington County.

On behalf of the Marine Corps League and the “Toys for Tots” foundation, Jim Ewen and I would like you thank each and every one of you for your help and making the 2014 campaign a success.
