You've worked hard to get where you are in your career. Are you making the most of everything that comes with it?

For many successful professionals and executives, compensation extends well beyond a paycheck. Retirement plans, equity compensation, deferred compensation and employer-sponsored benefits can represent significant financial opportunities.

With open enrollment approaching, this is a good time to look at the bigger picture.

Are your benefits aligned with your financial goals? Are there opportunities you may be overlooking? And how do these decisions fit into your long-term wealth strategy?

Building wealth is one thing. Being intentional about how you manage every aspect of it is another.

I love the idea of wealth alignment because it moves the conversation beyond simply asking, “How much have I accumulated?”
Instead, it asks whether your money, goals, values and lifestyle are actually working together.
Maybe wealth means having the freedom to travel more.
Maybe it means spending more time with family, creating opportunities for your children or grandchildren, supporting causes you care about or simply having more choice in how you spend your time.
There isn't one definition that works for everyone.
That’s why I think the best financial conversations begin with understanding what you want your wealth to support.
Your finances should support your life, rather than control it.

Just because I can afford something doesn't mean I need to buy it.

I've always been intentional about how I spend my money, and that applies to everything from my wardrobe to the experiences I choose to invest in.

I'd rather purchase one beautiful, well-made piece that I'll wear for years than fill my closet with things I'll only wear a handful of times.

The same goes for the little purchases we make without giving them much thought. It's not necessarily about the amount of money being spent. It's about whether that purchase actually adds value to your life.

To me, having wealth doesn't mean buying everything you want. It means having the freedom to be selective.

Buy what you love. Choose quality. Spend on experiences that matter. And don't be afraid to say no to the things that don't.

Being able to afford something and choosing to spend money on it are two very different things.

Building wealth changes the conversation.

At one point, the questions may have been:
Am I saving enough? Should I be investing? Can I retire?

As your financial life becomes more established, I find the questions become much more nuanced.

How intentionally am I managing taxes?
How much investment risk do I actually need?
How do I translate wealth into the life I want to live?
How do I prepare my family for what I may eventually pass on?

There comes a point when accumulating more isn't the only consideration. How everything works together becomes just as important.

When was the last time you looked at what your lifestyle actually costs?
And I don't just mean the obvious monthly bills.
Your expenses can include everything from housing, transportation and healthcare to travel, dining, memberships, hobbies, giving and the services that make life a little easier. The Ameriprise expense worksheet breaks these into essential expenses and lifestyle expenses, helping you see both your monthly and annual totals.
I think this is an especially valuable exercise when preparing for retirement. Knowing what it costs to support the life you enjoy gives us a much clearer starting point for conversations around income, savings and retirement planning.
Use the expense calculator to take a closer look at your numbers — and if you'd like help putting those numbers into the context of your larger financial picture, reach out. I'm always happy to help. https://bit.ly/3W4CkjF

Open enrollment is easy to treat like a “check the same boxes as last year” task.
I’d encourage you not to.
A lot can change in a year — your health, your family, your income, your savings priorities and even how you expect to use your benefits.
Before making your selections:
• Look at what you actually used this year
• Review your health plan options
• Revisit HSA or FSA elections
• Check life and disability coverage
• Review available workplace benefits
Benefits are part of your compensation. Take the time to make sure you're using them thoughtfully.

I’ve always believed that being financially responsible doesn’t mean you have to say no to the things you want to experience.

I’m intentional about how I spend my money. I don't believe in spending just to spend, but I do believe in making room for the things that matter to me. Travel, new experiences and making memories are absolutely part of that.

After all, what’s the point of working hard and building wealth if you never allow yourself to enjoy it?

Financial planning isn't just about what you save. It's also about being able to spend with purpose.

So, I'm curious... what travel destination is at the top of your bucket list?

There’s an important change to retirement contributions in 2026 that higher earners should have on their radar.
If you’re 50 or older and earned more than $150,000 in 2025 from the employer sponsoring your plan, age-based catch-up contributions to a 401(k), 403(b) or governmental 457(b) must now be made on an after-tax Roth basis.
That change may affect more than how your contributions are made. It can also influence:
• Your taxable income
• Your take-home pay
• Your overall tax strategy
• The mix of pretax and Roth assets you have for retirement
For my clients who are in their peak earning years, these are exactly the kinds of changes I want us to look at within the entire financial picture, rather than treating a retirement account as a standalone decision.
If this rule applies to you, now is a good time to review your contributions and understand how the change fits into your retirement and tax strategy.
Read the article to learn more about the new Roth catch-up contribution rules and what they could mean for you.

Financial planning has never been just about investments.
It’s about understanding how all the pieces of your financial life work together and the life you want your wealth to support.
For Financial Planning Month, I encourage you to look beyond individual accounts and ask a bigger question: Does everything I have actually work together?
