“Do politicians impact the stock market? Yes, but not nearly as much as most assume,”

Well...... like many investors, we're assuming our clients might also have been wondering how the upcoming midterm elections will affect stocks.

You should know that politicians don’t matter as much to financial markets as people often think. This election will likely have less influence on the financial markets than many would expect.

Here are three reasons why politicians’ influence on markets is limited.

The stock market is always pricing in expected future earnings, which trend up regardless of which part is in power. The historical return differential between Republican and Democratic administrations has been virtually nonexistent.
Markets generally favor a division of power, a divided government can cause political gridlock, which means less change and uncertainty. Markets have mostly gone up no matter which party is in power, however, even if one has total control.
Market volatility leading up to midterm elections typically smooths out, he noted, the market historically enjoys above-average returns after midterms are finished.
The U.S. stock market has been positive every year following a midterm election since WWII. That certainly doesn’t mean it will happen again this time, but the market will likely find its way regardless of the election outcome.

As always, thank you for your trust and confidence you have placed in us.

☘️ The List is Long
I often note that when I started in 1982, the DOW was just under 950. It has spend the better part of the previous 5 years – doubling – from the 1975 lows triggered by the recession then as OPEC created their oil embargo. Gas prices here in the US set records – at 77 cents a gallon. By 1982 when I started, headlines were clear:

“The US Economy Cannot Withstand $1.00 a Gallon Gasoline.”

What else did we make it through?
-An endless number of angst-ridden political embarrassments, wrong-doings, failures and lies
-A veritable laundry list of the worst natural disasters you could imagine
-Several recessions since 1982
-The Crash of October 1987
-The recession of the early 90s, costing hundreds of billions in bad debt and over 1500 bank and thrift closures
-The mid-90’s slowdowns
-An endless array of tax law changes
-Dozens of scares about inflation and deflation
-Oil crashes
-Real estate crashes
-The Tech Bubble of 2000
-The 9/11 Atacks
-A 20-year war
-The 2008-2009 Great Recession
-Brexit, Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7(a), 7(b) and 7(c)
-Ebola
-The China Slowdown
-The China Takeover
-North Korea unrest
-The China Tariff War
-Ugly elections
-More of the China Tariff War
-The Global Pandemic Release & Shutdown
-The wide-ranging list of variants from Covid

…the key?

The list never ends. There are more disasters waiting in the wings as soon as any current Armageddon trigger is vanquished.

Buckle up, grab your popcorn and refresh your cold drinks.
Years more excitement lay ahead – indeed, our best years await our arrival.
Do not be swayed by the assured storms. They will unfold faster than in the past – and that will make them “feel” more intense…but they won’t be.
Instead, they will just be continuing additions to the long list noted above of all the things we have made it through – together – with patience.

ONE DAY IT WILL BE YOU !!!

“Twice this week, I have watched an elderly individual, fade into the busy life in which we all live. One man just needed Panadol for his wife but the shop assistant simply said it’s in aisle ‘6’. But he struggled to navigate the supermarket and as I watched him go in the wrong direction, I left all my groceries and took him where he needed to go.”

“Today, I watched an elderly man struggle in the heat, who had obviously had a fall with a huge scrape and blood on his leg. He walked past people in the cafe, while he slowly made his way to his car. Not one person stopped. Or looked. Or acknowledged him. I took him to his car and checked he was ok. He told me he had a fall and wasn’t sure how the air con worked in his car so he just didn’t use it. I sat with him, until his air con kicked in and heard him talk about the old frail body that he is in, that fails him now, every single day.”

“When you see an elderly person walking down the street, searching in the supermarket or struggling to their car, take a minute out of your busy schedule and ask them if they need a hand. Think about your grand parents and your parents and how pi**ed you would be if someone didn’t stop to help them. But more, think of them as you.”

“Once upon a time they were you. They were busy, they had work, they had children, they were able. Today, they are just in an older body that is not going as fast as it used to and this busy life is confusing. They deserve our utmost respect and consideration. One day it will be you, it will be us. I wish more people gave a darn about them and acknowledged them for their admirable existence and jeez I hope someday, not that far away, someone does it for me.”

Wise words from the author, Adele Renee. :)

The headlines were almost comical at times:

“Market Dives for 5 Days Straight”

“Selling Defies Effort to Reverse Market Tailspin”

“Covid and Peak Earnings Fears Chop Market Down”

“DOW Plummets on the Close”

(note to self: we are about 2% off of all-time highs)

Lesson? Don’t read this type of garbage anymore than you absolutely must.

"This is that period between the earnings seasons when the useless noise picks up to fill the time on the airwaves. Our focus? The unfolding Barbell Economy® all around us. You think the last few years have gone by fast? Wait until you get a load of the next 5 years. Buckle up and tighten those shoulder straps. Be confident that the ride ahead will include plenty of bumps along the way, each one pushing us further up the mountain as it is resolved.

I know it is hard to stay focused on this at time, but here is the deal: Our best years are ahead of us."
