Today we learned of the passing of our long time client, Mel Kreines. Mel’s law practice shared many clients with us, so many of you reading this knew Mel.
Mel was a well respected attorney with an intimidating presence. His deep voice and linebacker physique, combined with his legal prowess made him someone you wanted on your side and dreaded if he was your opposition.
What made Mel so unique to me was the man beneath the persona. Watching my kids visiting him at his office while I worked was the true testament of who Mel was. Seeing them on the lap of his expensive suits, messing his perfectly coiffed hair and them all laughing and playing together showed the heart of the “tough guy” lawyer. Mel bringing his baseball mitt in so he could have a catch in the parking lot with my boys. My kids anxiously awaiting my next monthly visit so they can see Mel again. That is the Mel Kreines who I’ll remember as such a special man.
During the almost 30 years I knew and worked with Mel, there were times he’d give me advice. One thing he said is don’t become friends with your clients. It makes things more difficult from a business sense. Well, I guess I didn’t always take your advice. Goodbye my friend. RIP. We were lucky to know you.
