A chart of accounts (COA) is a complete list of the accounts used to categorize all financial transactions in a company's general ledger 🧾

It’s set up and used by the company's accountant or bookkeeper, and is usually made up of five major categories; assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, and expenses. Some businesses may have a very simple COA, and others could have hundreds of different accounts in their COA. The complexity of a business’s COA generally reflects the complexity and size of the business 🧮

The COA is essential in tracking your business's cash flow and evaluating its financial health, so it’s imperative that it’s accurate and being utilized correctly! 💸

Meet our faithful leader and accounting expert, Brian!

He entered the workforce at the age of 11 by selling doughnuts to construction crews and other small, local businesses where he grew up. It was the kickstarter for an ambitious young man who developed a passion for business. His Masters degree in Business Administration and licensing as a CPA are a testament to that! He has spent 25+ years in the business and finance sectors gaining invaluable knowledge and experience to better serve his clients. He's played many different roles, in many different situations and understands the complexities of each unique situation that comes his way. From multi-billion dollar companies to small business ownership, auditing to tax preparation, and manager to employee, he gets it!

When Brian isn't killing it in the work place, he's spending time with his wife and 5 boys, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling. He's a family man through-and-through, but loves taking the time to experience and learn about new places and cultures. He has spent a decent portion of his life visiting over 20 countries and is always looking forward to the next opportunity to visit somewhere new.

Brian is dedicated to his clients and can't wait to help you achieve your business and financial goals! What questions have you had about your finances recently? Tell us in the comments below!

If you've ever asked yourself "Should I hire a CPA or should I hire a tax preparer?", then you're not alone. There are a lot of titles out there when it comes to finances; CPA, accountant, bookkeeper, financial advisor, tax preparer. It can get a bit confusing! Which one is right for you really depends on your unique financial situation. So let's review some of the key differences between a tax preparer and a CPA.

A tax preparer is a non-licensed professional that has a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS and is authorized to prepare tax returns for compensation. They can review financial reports and apply that information to their clients' tax returns. Tax preparers are a great option for people with uncomplicated financial situations, and generally provide their services at a lower cost.

Certified Public Accountants (CPA) are the best option for people with investments, businesses, and more complex finances. The requirements for becoming a CPA are much higher than a tax preparer. They undergo extensive training and education, examinations, and licensing through educational institutions and the State Board of Accountancy. Their expertise spans, but is not limited to, tax preparation, business advisory, financial planning, bookkeeping, reporting and analysis, and account reconciliation. Their knowledge may come at a higher cost, but it can be invaluable to you or your business!

Have you used a CPA or a tax preparer in the past? What questions have you thought of when deciding which to use? Tell us in the comments below!
