Summer may be one of the most overlooked planning seasons for growing businesses.

The urgency of year-end hasn't arrived yet. Deadlines aren't looming.

Most organizations are focused on operations, customers, and growth. And, that's exactly why it's a valuable time to step back and evaluate the bigger picture.

- What has changed since January?
- Are forecasts still realistic?
- Is cash flow supporting growth?
- Are there tax planning opportunities worth exploring before year-end?

Strong financial outcomes rarely happen by accident in December. More often, they're the result of decisions made months earlier.

The best time to plan is before you need to. So while this topic is top of mind, we are pretty great at spearheading this for you, so you can stay focused on running your business.

Consider us your financial co-pilot. You focus on the business. We'll help navigate what comes next.

We're excited to welcome Richard "Rick" Rohl to Lohman Company as our newest Controller.

Rick is a CPA with nearly 40 years of accounting and finance experience across public accounting, private industry, and healthcare leadership. In many ways, his career has come full circle, returning to public accounting with decades of real-world experience behind him.

What makes this hire even more special is the connection. Rick previously worked with partner Matt Hatfield years ago, and when this opportunity came along, Matt knew exactly who to call.

Rick says one of the biggest reasons he joined Lohman Company was the culture.

"Everyone is so welcoming and helpful that I felt like I belonged on Day 1."

He's looking forward to helping streamline processes, strengthen reporting, and provide deeper financial insights as the firm continues to grow.

And because every great introduction needs a few fun facts...

♟️ Coffee order during month-end close? Medium roast, sweet, no cream.

♟️ His unofficial title? "The accountant for accountants."

♟️ If his spreadsheets had a personality? "Organized, with a touch of formatting, always with panes frozen."

We think he'll fit right in. Welcome to the team, Rick!

June/July is one of the best times to pause and evaluate where your business stands.

Not just revenue. Not just profitability.

The businesses that finish the year strong are often the ones that use mid-year as a checkpoint, not a formality. Some questions worth asking:

• Are we tracking toward our goals?
• Are margins healthy?
• Is cash flow supporting growth?
• Have our priorities changed since January?

The answers can shape decisions for the rest of the year.

What financial metric are you paying closest attention to this quarter?

"Technology without humanity is just machinery."

That quote from Kate O'Neill, CSP® may have summed up Scaling New Heights 2026 conference by Woodard Company better than anything else we heard all week.

The conference theme was Strange New World, and after four days of discussions around AI, leadership, innovation, and the future of accounting, one thing became clear:

The firms that thrive won't simply be the ones with the newest technology. They'll be the ones that know how to combine innovation with expertise, relationships, and trust.

We've recapped our biggest takeaways from the conference and what they mean for the future of the profession.

June is a natural checkpoint for growing businesses ✅

Half the year is behind us. The question is whether your financial strategy is keeping pace with where the business is headed.

A few questions worth asking this month:

• Are estimated tax payments accounted for?
• Have retirement plan contributions been reviewed?
• Are cash reserves where they need to be?
• Is year-end tax planning already on the radar?
• Have any major business changes impacted your tax strategy?

The businesses with the most flexibility rarely wait until the fourth quarter to start planning.

They use the middle of the year to identify opportunities, adjust course if needed, and make decisions before deadlines create pressure. Or, when they hire Lohman, it's one of the reasons our clients engage us year-round, not just at year end.

Sometimes the most valuable financial planning conversations happen long before year-end.

What is the biggest financial priority for your business during the second half of the year?

It was a great week at Scaling New Heights 2026 by Woodard Company.

One of the highlights was hearing from April Rinne, bestselling author, global futurist, and change navigator. Her message focused on something many businesses are experiencing firsthand: uncertainty.

Two quotes that stood out:

💥 "Uncertainty is opportunity in its purest form."

💥 "A world in flux opens up a world of opportunity."

As technology, AI, and business continue to evolve at an incredible pace, her perspective was a powerful reminder that change isn't something to fear. It's something to embrace.

The conversations, ideas, and insights have made this a week well spent.

Scaling New Heights 2026 by Woodard Company is living up to its name! 😎

After arriving in Orlando and diving into a few days of sessions, conversations, and networking, one thing is clear:

AI isn't a future trend anymore. It's the conversation happening across the accounting profession right now!

One of the highlights so far has been learning from industry leaders like Ron Baker, Co-founder of Threshold and renowned author, and Jason Staats, Founder of Jason Online and Realize, along with countless other professionals who are helping shape the future of accounting, advisory services, and firm growth.

The best part of events like this isn't just what's happening on stage. It's the conversations between sessions, the new perspectives, and the ideas you bring home to your clients and team.

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and gather insights that will help us continue delivering value to the businesses we serve.

Thanks to Woodard for hosting another great Scaling New Heights experience.

Partner spotlight: Craig Lohman

Business strategist by day. Summer golf league husband by night.

Craig and his wife recently joined a summer golf league together while she learns the game, which means Craig is currently balancing two very important skills...Running a CPA firm and pretending not to coach every swing.

Somewhere between client meetings, tax planning conversations, and leadership responsibilities, there’s now also tee times, scorecards, and probably at least one discussion each week that starts with: “Don’t overthink it.”

At Lohman Company, we believe great advisors are real people first. The kind who care deeply about relationships, show up for their families, and understand there’s more to life than spreadsheets and deadlines...although Craig would probably still prefer a perfectly organized spreadsheet over a missed putt.

So we made it past the dreaded April 15th.

But truthfully, at Lohman, we’ve been focused on the “in” list long before it became trendy.

Building a strong internal culture.
Encouraging work-life balance. Creating better systems and better communication.

Because when teams feel supported, clients feel the difference too.

How are you making sure your team avoids burnout after busy season?

Here’s to the tax professionals who know the year isn’t measured in quarters. It’s measured in seasons.

▪️Busy season.
▪️Extension season.
▪️The “let’s finally get organized” season.
▪️The tax planning scramble.

But here’s the thing...it doesn’t have to feel like chaos every single time. The key:

🔘Better systems.
🔘Better planning.
🔘Better communication.
🔘Better partnership.

That’s the difference between surviving the season and actually being prepared for it. No matter what season you’re in, the goal should never be constant fire drills.

Which season are you currently in?
