If you look it up the $1.46 million figure is a national average from Northwestern Mutual’s 2026 Planning & Progress Study. It may be helpful as a reference, but it is not a required retirement number for you.

Someone planning to travel frequently and maintain two homes may need more. Someone with lower expenses, a pension or dependable retirement income may need less.

Your retirement number should be based on your life—not someone else’s average.

A personalized retirement plan should consider:

• Your estimated monthly expenses
• Social Security and pension income
• Healthcare and long-term care costs
• Inflation and taxes
• How long your savings may need to last
• Where dependable monthly income will come from

The better question is not simply, “Have I saved enough?”

It is: Do I have a plan to turn what I have saved into income that can support the retirement I want?”

I can help you review the numbers and determine what retirement readiness looks like for you. And you can calculate your personal money situation here: https://financial-investment-services.retirementconfidencecenter.com/c/money-last

For many people, retirement planning starts with one big question:
“How much money do I need to retire?”

But another question may be even more important:
“How will I turn my savings into income I can count on?”

Retirement can last 20, 30, or even 40 years. During that time, market changes, inflation, taxes, healthcare costs, and unexpected expenses can all affect your financial confidence.

That is why retirement planning should focus on more than accumulation. It should also include a strategy for creating income throughout retirement.
For some individuals, annuities may be one option to consider as part of a broader retirement income plan. Depending on the type of annuity and the terms of the contract, they may help address concerns such as income stability, market risk, and the possibility of outliving savings.

Annuities are not right for everyone, and features, fees, limitations, and guarantees can vary by product. But the conversation is worth having.

Because retirement is not just about reaching a number.

It is about creating income you can plan around.
