The reason a CPA hesitates to refer a client is rarely the firm. It is the fear of what happens in that first meeting.
Everyone has sent someone somewhere once and heard about it afterward. So here is exactly what happens when a professional sends a client to us.
First, a short call with no documents. We find out what the person actually wants and whether we are a sensible fit. If we are not, we say so on that call.
Second, if it makes sense to continue, a review of what they currently hold. What it is, what it costs, where it overlaps. They keep that summary regardless of what they decide.
Third, a straight answer. Sometimes that answer is that their current arrangement is working and they should leave it alone. We have given that answer more than once.
The referring professional stays informed throughout, and nothing gets recommended that we would be uncomfortable explaining to you directly.
If you have ever been burned by a referral, what went wrong? It is worth knowing what to avoid.
