The 2014 Tax Season Opens Jan. 31! The new opening date will allow the IRS time to program and test its processing systems. The April 15 tax-filing deadline is fast approaching. Some taxpayers may find they need more time to file their return and need an extension. Here are some important facts about extensions:

1) Extra time to file is not extra time to pay. You will still owe penalty and interest on any tax not paid by April 15.

2) File on time even if you can't pay. If you complete your return but can't pay the full amount, do not request an extension. You should pay as much as you can to minimize penalty and interest charges. There are installment agreement options available.

3) If you e-file an extension (Form 4868), you can pay the estimated balance due by EFT withdrawal from a savings or checking account.

IRS is still working on issues surrounding returns filed with Form 8863 Education Credits with a small number of software providers. In correcting the problem, the IRS is estimating it could take 2-4 weeks to issue refunds to impacted taxpayers, stretching refunds into mid-April for release.

Just a tip for today: If you don't think you've received all the necessary tax forms to file your tax return, most tax forms can be found, downloaded and printed by logging onto your service provider website (employer websites, mortgage servicers, student loan servicers, college providers, unemployment online, etc...) Look for tax forms somewhere in your menu options. If you worked several jobs in 2012, make sure you contact those companies to ensure they have your correct mailing address and make arrangements to pick up a duplicate copy if needed.

The IRS is experiencing problems processing tax returns containing Form 8867 Earned Income Credit Checklist that has to be attached to a return containing the refundable EITC. They have inadvertently mailed taxpayers a letter, asking taxpayers to provide them with a copy of the form, which you wouldn't have. The IRS has indicated these letters should not have been mailed. Do not respond to it if you get one. The IRS is working to resolve this problem and working on getting these delayed refunds released soon. Taxpayers be patient!

The IRS is asking that taxpayers and tax preparers to limit the use its "Where's My Refund" tool on their website to once a day. Heavy volumes of traffic is causing service disruption. IRS systems are only updated once a day, usually overnight, and the same information is available whether on the website, IRS2go app on your smartphone, or IRS toll-free lines. Your account will not change more than once during the day.
