The IRS has issued a warning that tax refunds for this upcoming tax season are expected to be smaller than in previous years.
-The average tax refund is expected to be 20% smaller compared to last year.
-The pandemic-related tax breaks that expired on December 31, 2021 have been eliminated for 2022.
-The charitable donation deduction, which was up to $300 in 2021, has been eliminated for 2022.
-The tax credit for child care expenses has been reduced from a maximum of $8,000 in 2021 to a maximum of $2,100 in 2022.
-The child tax credit has been reduced from $3,000 per child in 2021 to $2,000 per child in 2022.
-The Earned Income Tax Credit has been reduced from a maximum of $1,500 in 2021 to a maximum of $560 in 2022 for those without qualifying children.
-The pandemic-related unemployment benefits are no longer tax-free and must be included in taxable income for 2022.
-Some taxpayers may see a decrease in their tax liability due to changes in the tax brackets and tax rates.
