One strategy is to apply Section 179 first to erase your active business income down to zero. Then, apply 100% Bonus Depreciation to any remaining asset basis if you want to strategically generate a tax loss.

Here is why: you can't use Section 179 to create a tax loss because it is strictly limited to your net business taxable income. On the flip side, 100% Bonus Depreciation doesn't care about your net income.

For example, if your net income is $100,000 and you buy a $150,000 machine:

โ€ข ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ 179: You can only deduct $100,000 this year. The remaining $50,000 carries forward to next year.
The purchase pushes your business into a $50,000 Net Operating Loss, which can potentially offset other income.

This distinction gives you more control over your tax outcome. You can decide whether it makes more sense to wipe out your current business tax bill or intentionally create a loss to offset other income.

When you look at your financial goals for this year, is your priority clearing out your active business income, or are you looking for ways to offset other income sources?

SpaceX has joined the Nasdaq-100, a major stock market index that tracks many of the largest nonfinancial companies listed on Nasdaq.

The move could make the company a holding in more index-based funds, including some funds used in retirement accounts.

Index inclusion can matter because index-tracking funds may need to add shares of a newly included company. That can affect demand for the stock, though it does not guarantee future performance.

The company recently went public and has seen notable stock-price movement since its initial public offering.

The broader takeaway is that index changes can indirectly affect what investors own, especially through mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and retirement account holdings.

For investors, this is a reminder to understand what is inside the funds they ownโ€”not just the name of the index or account.

The move could add the Elon Musk-led firm to many retirement portfolios.

Travel fraud gets worse every summer, and we hear more stories from clients every year.

A quick login from the lobby.

A brokerage app checked from the airport lounge.

A bank balance pulled up at a cafe.

Public networks are where accounts can get exposed.

A few habits worth building before the next trip:

๐Ÿ›‘ Skip public WiFi for anything financial. Use cellular data or a personal hotspot.

๐Ÿ›‘ Turn on real-time transaction alerts for every card.

๐Ÿ›‘ Consider using credit, not debit.

๐Ÿ›‘ Watch for skimmers (devices attached to gas pumps and ATMs that copy card data).

A few minutes of preparation before the trip can help prevent months of cleanup after.

Trump Accounts opened on July 4. A few questions are worth considering:

โžก๏ธ Our baby is 18 months old. Do we qualify for the $1,000?

Yes. Every U.S. citizen baby born since January 1, 2025, qualifies for a one-time $1,000 federal contribution.

โžก๏ธ Is there an income maximum?

No. Eligibility is based on the child's citizenship and birth date, not family income.

โžก๏ธ Our child is 7. Did we miss it?

Not entirely. Any U.S. citizen under 18 can have an account opened. The federal $1,000 payment applies only to children born in 2025 through 2028, but everything else still applies.

โžก๏ธ Can grandparents contribute?

Yes. Up to $5,000 per year combined across parents, grandparents, family, and the child themselves.

โžก๏ธ What is the catch?

State tax conformity varies; California, for example, does not currently conform.

Whether to contribute, how much, and how to coordinate it with what you already have are all worth talking through. Our team is here for that.

Yes, both Section 179 and the permanently restored 100% Bonus Depreciation rules apply to new and used equipment. If the asset is new to your business, you can deduct up to 100% of the purchase price in 2026.

For example, a three-year-old commercial oven bought from a closed restaurant is considered new to your business. It qualifies for a 100% immediate write-off this year.

But you can't claim the write-off if the equipment is acquired through:
โ€ข Gifts or inheritance
โ€ข Purchases from an immediate family member
โ€ข Shifts between business entities or LLCs you already own

So yes, buying used equipment can still come with a valuable tax benefit. You just need to make sure the purchase qualifies.

When you add equipment to your business, do you prefer buying brand new or finding good used deals?

Wouldn't we all love to receive a guaranteed $200 check just for walking around the block every morning, or patch up a sudden cash flow crunch by handing someone a tiny deed to our Baltic Avenue? Turns out the actual rules of that game don't translate very well to running a business.

Sustainable growth takes a lot more strategy than just rolling the dice. Financial control is about building clean bookkeeping systems, tracking your actual margins, and managing your cash flow with real data.

If you are ready to stop guessing and want a clear, data-driven strategy to manage your business cash flow, reach out to us today. Letโ€™s get your systems dialed in.

The price of a first-class Forever stamp rose from 78 cents to 82 cents on July 12.

The increase is part of a series of price hikes from the U.S. Postal Service, which has raised the cost of a first-class stamp several times in recent years.

USPS has cited financial losses, rising operating expenses, and declining mail volume as reasons for the latest increase.

Other postage costs also increased. Domestic postcards rose to 65 cents, while international postcards and letters rose to $1.75.

One important reminder: Forever stamps purchased before the increase still work after the price change. They continue to cover the current cost of one ounce of First-Class Mail postage.

For households and small businesses, postage may seem like a small expense โ€” but recurring cost increases can add up over time, especially for anyone who still relies on mailed bills, invoices, cards, or client communications.

The cost of a first-class Forever stamp has climbed 41% since 2021, and postal officials have signaled they want prices to rise even more.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ "Let's talk about it in December."

By December, choices can be limited. Mid-year is often the sweet spot for preparation.

โœ… The bracket picture is clearer than it was in January.

Roth IRA conversion timing is flexible within the calendar year, but the bracket math can influence the outcome.

Six months of runway means scenarios can be modeled, not rushed.

If the market dips before year-end, the same tax math may change. Those windows rarely give notice. Keep your tax, legal, or accounting professional in the loop if you see an opportunity.

December conversions can be reactive.

Mid-year conversions can be designed.

If youโ€™re wondering about timing, we welcome a discussion.

๐Ÿ“‹ To qualify for the tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal of earnings, Roth IRA distributions must meet a 5-year holding requirement and occur after age 59ยฝ. Tax-free and penalty-free withdrawals can also be taken under certain other circumstances, such as the owner's death. The original Roth IRA owner is not required to take minimum annual withdrawals.

Under current SECURE 2.0 laws, you must start taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) at either age 73 (if born between 1951 and 1959) or 75 (if born in 1960 or later).

The IRS lets you delay your first distribution until April 1st of the following year.

But doing this forces your first two RMDs into the same calendar year, creating an artificial income spike that can push you into a higher tax bracket.

Unless you have a specific reason to delay, your next move would be to take that first distribution by December 31st of your initial eligibility year.

Don't let a simple timing error give your hard-earned savings right back to the government at the finish line.
