The 2026 IRS business mileage rate just went up - here's what that means for your business.

Starting July 1, 2026, the standard mileage rate increased to $0.76 per mile. For the first half of the year (January through June) the rate was $0.725 per mile. If you use your vehicle for business, this mid-year change is important to note, as you may need to apply two different rates when calculating your annual mileage deduction.

A few things worth knowing:

A business mile is any drive with a clear business purpose - going to meet a client, picking up supplies, traveling between work locations. Your regular commute from home to your main workplace does not count.

To claim the deduction, you should keep a mileage log. The IRS wants to see the date, the destination, the business reason, and the number of miles. A mileage tracking app is the easiest way to stay on top of this throughout the year, rather than trying to frantically figure it out when tax season comes around.

If you have questions about vehicle deductions or whether the standard mileage rate is the right choice for your situation, we are here to help.

That sales tax you collected all year? It's not your money. It never was.

Here's what's actually happening: when a customer pays you sales tax, you're not earning it - you're holding it on behalf of the state until it's time to remit. It's a pass-through. It never touches your revenue, and when you send it in, it's not an expense either. It won't show up on your profit & loss statement.

So if you've ever felt that sting of writing a big sales tax check and wondered where all your profit went - that's the confusion this clears up. You didn't lose anything. You just returned what was never yours to keep.

This trips up so many business owners. Tag another business owner who needs to hear this! 👇

Real talk: your bank statement is not documentation.

The transaction is right there - the date, the amount, the restaurant. But the IRS doesn't just want to know that you spent money. They want to know why. Who were you with? What did you discuss?

A receipt plus a quick note = documentation that holds up. A bank statement alone = a gap you don't want to explain later.

It doesn't have to be complicated. A note in your phone right after the meal is all it takes. Capture the purpose while it's fresh instead of scrambling to remember at tax time.

Save the receipts. Future you will be grateful. 💛

(Pro tip: receipt-scanning apps like Expensify or Wave make this even easier. Drop a recommendation in the comments if you have a favorite!)

I talk to small business owners all the time who write checks to local charities, schools, and nonprofits - and assume they're getting a solid tax deduction out of it. Here's the reality: for most small businesses, that's not actually how it works.

When your business donates to a charity, the IRS doesn't treat it as a business expense. For sole props, LLCs, S-corps, and partnerships, that donation flows to your personal tax return as an itemized deduction, not your business return. With today's standard deduction sitting at $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married filers, most people never actually itemize. Which means that "deduction" often does nothing.

Sponsorships work completely differently. When your business sponsors something, you're purchasing advertising and visibility - logo placement, name recognition, booth space, a shoutout on social media. That makes it an ordinary business expense, fully deductible right on your business return, regardless of how your business is structured.

Same community. Same dollars. But now your business is getting something back, exposure AND the deduction.

Next time someone reaches out asking for a donation, ask if they have sponsorship packages available. It's a small shift that can make a big difference. 💡

Questions about how this applies to your business? Drop them in the comments, I'd love to help!
