Should you take social security at age 67 or age 70? Financial need and life expectancy are two issues to consider. Below is an article I wrote explaining some of the things to consider.

Optimizing Social Security: Age 67 vs. Age 70
When evaluating whether to claim Social Security at Full Retirement Age (67) or delay until the maximum benefit age (70), the decision comes down to a classic financial trade-off between a higher guaranteed payout and the time value of money.

1. The Nominal Breakeven Point
On a strictly nominal basis, the breakeven age between claiming at 67 versus 70 sits right around 82 to 83 years old.

The Math: It takes just over 12 years of receiving the larger age-70 checks to fully recoup the three years of foregone cash flow.

The Catch: This standard calculation only looks at pure dollar amounts in a vacuum. It assumes a 0% return environment and completely ignores capital allocation.

2. Opportunity Cost and Compounding Returns
From an investment perspective, claiming at age 67 introduces a compelling variable: the ability to immediately put that cash flow to work in the markets.

By taking distributions early and investing them, you leverage compounding interest. Even a modest total return over those initial years shifts the equation, potentially pushing the actual financial breakeven age much further out than 83.

3. Wealth Preservation and Estate Planning
There is also a critical risk-management and legacy component to consider. Social Security is essentially a non-transferable asset with a "use-it-or-lose-it" risk profiles.

Delaying to 70: If you defer benefits and pass away prematurely, that potential wealth vanishes back into the system.

Claiming at 67: Taking early distributions allows you to convert a government promise into private, liquid wealth. Because those funds are routed into your investment portfolio, they become part of your tangible estate—ensuring that capital can be passed down to your heirs rather than left on the table.

Tax Alert: Is your state one of the 27 participating in the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit? California is not, yet.

The IRS just announced that more than half of U.S. states have officially signed up for the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (FSTC) program, enacted under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill.

If you live in a participating state, you could claim a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 by contributing to qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) that support elementary and secondary education! 🎒✨

The initial list of participating states includes:
AL, AK, AR, CO, FL, GA, ID, IN, IA, LA, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, ND, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WV, and WY.

Want to know how this impacts your 2026 tax strategy or how to find an eligible SGO? We're keeping a close eye on these updates.

Top 12 Tax Scams: I've been getting the second one for the last few weeks. A recorded message that someone is reviewing my tax account and can help reduce payments. I do not have tax debt.

A client just called worried because he got the same call. Don't fall for the scams! The IRS will not, ever, call you.

The Super Bowl’s jock tax hit Sam Darnold’s paycheck hard. California taxes can leave NFL players with less after-tax income than their Super Bowl bonus.
