100% bonus depreciation is permanent for property acquired after January 19, 2025.

That means many equipment, vehicle, and qualifying building-component purchases can be fully expensed in year one. Section 179 remains a separate tool with a $2,560,000 cap for 2026 and an income limitation that can change your best move.

Deciding Section 179 vs. bonus depreciation before year-end matters: the order on Form 4562 and whether an asset is placed in service will change which tax year the deduction hits. Read the full breakdown on our site or schedule a year-end review with our advisors, which purchases belong on 2026 returns?

Moving for lower taxes? Read this first.

Texas has no individual income tax, but the state shifts the burden to property, sales, and business levies. California still taxes wages and capital gains up to 12.30% in 2026, and residency rules are fact-based, not date-based.

Common surprises: Texas shows an effective property-tax rate near 1.40% and average combined sales tax around 8.20%. A company sale can trigger California ordinary-income rates, and "no tax due" in Texas often still requires filings.

NUA can convert employer stock growth into long‑term capital gains.

If you hold concentrated company stock in a 401(k), NUA may let you pay ordinary income tax only on the cost basis now, and long‑term capital gains on the growth when you sell. The rules are mechanical and easy to fail if you mis-time the distribution.

Important: the distribution must be a lump‑sum from all of the employer's plans of the same kind in one tax year, and rolling the shares into an IRA eliminates NUA permanently. Run the numbers with your CPA before you instruct the plan.

Do you have concentrated employer stock and want us to model whether NUA could help you?

Here's something that surprises a lot of real estate investors.

You can buy a property, renovate it, sell it for a substantial profit, and discover that the IRS views your transaction very differently than you do.

Why?

Because there's a big difference between being a real estate investor and being in the business of selling real estate.

And that distinction can change how your profits are taxed.

Long-term capital gains treatment may offer significant advantages over ordinary business income treatment.

But here's the catch: 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆.

Your intentions, activities, and the nature of the transaction all matter.

That's why we spend so much time helping clients think through real estate transactions before they happen.

A profitable deal is great.

A profitable deal with a well-planned tax strategy? Even better.

S corp doesn't erase your income tax. It changes which part of your income pays payroll tax, and that difference matters only when the numbers line up.

An S corp saves Social Security and Medicare on profit above a defensible salary, but it does not lower your ordinary income tax rate. You also add payroll processing, Form 1120-S, bookkeeping and possible state costs—so the net saving can be much smaller than headline math.

Want us to run this exact worked example with your profit and a reasonable salary, or see whether an S corp is likely to pay for your business?

Most owners plan taxes at filing. That’s backwards.

Proactive tax planning is a posture, not a task: you act while salary, retirement deferrals, depreciation timing, and investments can still change the bill. The article walks the 2026 limits and a practical quarterly calendar so you know when each choice matters.

For 2026 the 401(k) employee deferral is $24,500 and total annual additions cap at $72,000. S‑corp owners: contributions must be based on W‑2 pay, so salary and retirement belong in the same plan early in the year.

Which quarter will you schedule your first planning check‑in?

𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗣𝗔𝗬 $𝟰𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗥?

Of course not. Unless the appetizer comes with a beach house.

But here's something worth thinking about...

Business owners and real estate investors make financial decisions every day that can cost them tens of thousands of dollars in unnecessary taxes.

Selling a property. Buying equipment. Choosing how to pay yourself. Making a major investment.

The problem isn't always the decision itself.

And by the time your tax return is prepared, many opportunities to reduce that tax bill may already be gone.

At Shore Tax & Financial Planning, we combine CPA expertise with comprehensive financial planning to help you make smarter decisions BEFORE they become expensive mistakes.

Section 174 changed: domestic research and experimental costs paid or incurred in tax years beginning after 12/31/2024 are generally deductible when incurred.

If you capitalized R&D in 2022–2024, you may still recover meaningful deductions. Options differ by business size and filing history, and the IRS published specific election procedures in IRB 2025-38.

Watch the research-credit coordination and state conformity traps before you amend or elect, and document everything carefully. Want us to review your 2022–2024 amortization balances for opportunities? Book a consult or comment below.

𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗬. 𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨?

Your revenue is up. You're working harder than ever. Business looks great on paper.

So why doesn't your bank account reflect all that success?

Here's what many business owners overlook:

1. Taxes: You could be paying more than necessary because you're not planning ahead.

2. Cash Flow: More revenue doesn't always mean more money in your pocket.

3. Investments: You're reinvesting in your business, but are you building wealth outside of it?

4. Retirement: You have a plan to grow your business. Do you have a plan to eventually stop working?

5. Financial Decisions: Are you looking at the big picture before making major financial commitments?

You started it to create opportunities, security, and a better future.

But working harder isn't always the answer. Sometimes, you need a better way to manage what you've already built.

That's where Shore Financial Planning comes in.

Imagine paying $1.37 million in taxes, only to discover that with the right strategy, that number could have been a fraction of the cost. This is the reality for one commercial real estate client who saw their tax burden plummet to just $205,000—without changing their income or their business operations.

It’s a powerful reminder that growth isn't just about what a business earns, but how it’s structured. By simply implementing a smarter, proactive tax plan, the same company achieved a massive shift in their bottom line. For entrepreneurs tired of watching their hard-earned profits vanish every tax season, this approach proves that strategic planning is the ultimate game-changer.
