What does it mean when your Tax Preparer tells you we need to file an extension??

An extension is a formal way of letting the IRS know you need more time to file. Normally due date for taxes is April 15th, an extension gives you a new deadline of October 15th. Importantly, this is an extension to file, not an extension to pay; any taxes owed must still be paid by the original deadline to avoid interest and penalties.
But extensions will help avoid failure to file penalties.
