September is Life Insurance Awareness Month

Each year, September is dedicated to helping people understand the importance of life insurance. It serves as a reminder to think about your needs and reevaluate your existing coverage.

Currently, 40% of adults state that they need life insurance, or more of it.

If you’re thinking about getting life insurance, your instincts are correct. Life insurance is the foundation of financial planning. It helps protect what’s most important and helps you feel secure in case of tragedy.

In 2003, the U.S. Congress officially declared September College Savings Month, making a nationwide invitation to dream big for our children’s futures and take steps toward making those dreams a reality. It’s the perfect time to start planning for college costs so your child can chase their academic and life goals without being weighed down by overwhelming debt.

One of the smartest, most empowering steps you can take is opening and contributing to a 529 education savings account. It’s a tax-advantaged way to prepare for future education expenses — and it can make a real difference in reducing the need for student loans down the road.

Healthy Aging Month champions well-being throughout the month of September. This observance encourages everyone to adopt proactive habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient sleep.

Living longer doesn’t automatically mean living better.

Healthy Aging Month is a reminder that how we age is shaped by more than just time. Staying active, mentally sharp, and socially connected all play a role—and so does the ability to support those lifestyles over time.

Small, consistent habits—both physical and financial—can influence what those years look like. Take this month to assess your lifestyle, learn new health strategies, and inspire others to prioritize their physical and mental health!💪

Wildfire smoke can travel far from the flames, creating poor air quality in communities many miles away.

Experts say one of the biggest risks comes from tiny particles in the air, which can contribute to short-term and chronic health issues.

When smoke levels are high, health officials recommend staying indoors and taking steps to keep indoor air as clean as possible.

If you have central air conditioning, use the highest level of filtration your system can handle. Filters rated MERV 13 or higher are ideal, and setting the system to recirculate can help limit outside air.

A portable HEPA air filter can also help. If you only have one, consider using it to create a “clean room” where you can spend most of your time.

Experts also recommend sealing gaps where smoky air can enter and avoiding sources of indoor combustion, including candles, fireplaces, and gas stoves.

Wildfire smoke can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, headaches, and burning eyes or nose. Anyone wheezing, struggling to breathe, or in distress should seek emergency care.

The price of a first-class Forever stamp rose from 78 cents to 82 cents on July 12.

The increase is part of a series of price hikes from the U.S. Postal Service, which has raised the cost of a first-class stamp several times in recent years.

USPS has cited financial losses, rising operating expenses, and declining mail volume as reasons for the latest increase.

Other postage costs also increased. Domestic postcards rose to 65 cents, while international postcards and letters rose to $1.75.

One important reminder: Forever stamps purchased before the increase still work after the price change. They continue to cover the current cost of one ounce of First-Class Mail postage.

For households and small businesses, postage may seem like a small expense — but recurring cost increases can add up over time, especially for anyone who still relies on mailed bills, invoices, cards, or client communications.

The Common Cents Act has passed the House and now moves to the Senate for consideration.

The bill is tied to the phase-out of the penny and would create a national rounding standard for cash transactions.

Under the proposal, cash purchases would be rounded up or down to the nearest five cents when exact change is not available.

For example, a purchase totaling $10.02 would round down to $10.00, while a purchase totaling $10.04 would round up to $10.05.

Pennies would still retain their value under the act, even as the Treasury stopped minting them.

The bill is especially relevant for businesses that handle cash, including restaurants and retailers, because it could reduce confusion and legal risk around exact change.

For consumers and businesses, the broader takeaway is that even small changes in currency rules can affect daily transactions, checkout systems, and cash-handling practices.
