It’s a great time to review your paystub and make sure you are having enough withheld to cover your federal and, if applicable, state income taxes. Every year, I see clients who are caught by surprise when they end up owing-and in most cases, it is because of their withholdings. If you are married, check with your spouse…just not on date night ok?

The second half of a given year means getting some of our clients - investors, trusts, estates, business owners and family office clients, among others, filed.

The second half of a given year means discussing long-term financial planning with our clients. We recently introduced financial planning to our clients. While we love working with our clients’ financial advisors, we are happy to provide a “second look” at our clients’ investment plans and deepen our relationship further.

I’m always a bit reflective after tax season. The past 3 years have felt like one long year in certain respects. My team and I faced the typical challenges head on and I’m very pleased with the results as we pivot towards the next few months.

We will be working on our not-for-profit clients quite a bit along with extensions and several valuation projects. I’m fortunate enough to say that we have capacity for new client relationships.

Third round of stimulus and child tax credit advances are among 2021’s differences with your Form 1040 filing. Neither are taxable income but failure to report receipt of either properly could impact the calculation of your refund (or amount due) and delay receipt of your income tax refund.

Keep an eye out for several new forms from the IRS that will report both amounts. You also have the ability to retrieve these amounts from IRS.GOV should you not receive via US Mail.

For your 2021 income tax return, an individual may deduct up to $300 in cash contributions, even if one takes the standard deduction. Unlike 2020 tax returns, a married filing jointly couple may deduct up to $600 in cash contributions in 2021 - just be sure to make that contribution happen on or before December 31.

Required Minimum Distributions - If you have not already done so and you are required to, please ensure you take your RMD by December 31! No option to skip in 2021 unlike last year.

Failure to do so could mean a severe penalty.
