IR-2020-02, January 6, 2020 — The Internal Revenue Service confirmed that the nation’s tax season will start for individual tax return filers on Monday, January 27, 2020, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2019 tax year returns.

October 15, 2019 is the deadline to file an individual tax return for those who have previously filed an extension form 4868. It’s also the last day that the IRS will accept electronically filed tax returns for tax year 2018. Returns filed after this date can only be sent via mail.
