Are you frustrated with filing for your Minnesota Renter Credit? If so, it’s completely understandable. Minnesota’s new process for claiming your renters credit has essentially prevented anyone from paper filing to receive it.
There are plenty of seniors that don’t have to file taxes, so they USED to get the two page M1PR form, include their Social Security income and their rent amount off the renters credit form (CRP), go to an easy to use chart to determine their refund, sign the form and mail it in.
Now….not so easy!!
For starters the landlord can’t even fill out a CRP on their own anymore. Landlord’s have to create a username and password with Minnesota Revenue E-Srevices to generate the CRP. It will then assign an Electronic Control Number to the CRP.
In order to paper file that CRP to get your refund this is how you do it:
You will have to print out a M1RENT, M1REF and a M1.
1 - Get your CRP ( it must have a control number)
2 - Fill out form M1RENT to calculate the refund amount
3 - Then use the refund amount to complete form M1REF (refundable credits)
4 - Lastly complete the M1 (Minnesota income tax)
Note: The M1 wants your adjusted gross income (AGI) from your Federal return. If you only have Social Security income, your AGI is zero. If you also have a small retirement, your AGI is only the small retirement.
