Please be aware that for those taxpayers receiving EITC (earned income tax credit) and ACTC (additional child tax credits) may not see their refunds until early March. The IRS has shared that they may not be issuing refunds for these tax returns until March 2 even though the tax returns may be filed much earlier than that.

Just a reminder that the deadline for 1099 reporting is fast approaching. All reporting must be completed by 1/31/2026. As a recap, 1099's with form 1096 must be submitted to the IRS for taxpayers that have paid any and all recipients $600 or more for rent, non-employee compensation (custom hire) and/or other miscellaneous purposes paid out in calendar year 2025.

Note that a new requirement that went into effect in 2024 is if you have a combination of 10 or more 1099's to issue and report, electronic filing is required. You no longer may report 1099's on paper with the IRS if you have 10 or more 1099's, regardless if they are all rent, non-employee compensation or a combination of either or both. If you have fewer than 10 total 1099's, they may still be filed on paper.

If you would like us to prepare the forms and/or reporting for you, we will need the following information:
Names of recipient
Address of recipient
SSN or TIN of recipient
Amount paid during calendar year 2025
Purpose of payment(s) (rent, non-employee compensation, etc).

Thanks again for your continued support. We look forward to working with you again in 2026!

We at Community Tax Service LLC wanted to share through our second post for 2025 tax considerations, some of the changes that we anticipate for the 2025 tax season and possibly beyond:
• Beginning in 2025, the bonus depreciation deduction reverts back to 100% of qualifying purchases versus the phase out that has been in effect (was just 60% for 2024 tax returns)
• Section 179 expense amounts increase in 2025 to $2.5m (was $1.25m in 2024) but does phase out at $4m of new asset purchases.
• Residential energy efficiency credits for windows, doors, central air conditioners, etc end after 12/31/2025.
• SALT deduction (State and Local Taxes) increases to $40,000 for tax years 2025-2029, subject to rules and limitations such as must file schedule A to claim.
• Annual gifting is limited to $19,000 per individual for 2025. This may increase in the future subject to inflation and/or other factors. Gifting above this amount does not typically result in taxes due but may require filing of a Federal Gift Tax Return form 709.
If you believe you need to do tax planning before year end, do not hesitate to contact us. We will be scheduling year end tax planning appointments through the 2nd week of December.

We at Community Tax Service LLC wanted to share some of the changes that we anticipate for the 2025 tax season and possibly beyond:
• Filers can deduct up to $25,000 of their tip income. There are rules and limitations that apply to this however.
• Up to $12,500 of qualified overtime per taxpayer may be deductible (subject to various rules and limitations).
• An additional $6,000 per qualifying taxpayer age 65 and older (subject to certain rules and limitations).
• Also, up to $10,000 of qualifying interest paid on a loan for a new vehicle may be deductible (subject to certain rules and limitations).
The above changes are temporary tax provision applicable for 2025-2028 tax years.
IRS is phasing out paper refund checks to individuals. Options for receiving refunds will be in the form of direct deposit, or other electronic methods, prepaid debit cards, digital wallets and similar methods.
For those businesses that filed their BOI reports with FINCEN, filing is no longer required for US based businesses. Recently the director of FINCEN reported to Congress that they will be deleting all information that was required to be filed with their department based on previous legislation.

Look for upcoming posts from Community Tax Service that will be sharing additional information related to 2025 and beyond tax filing changes.

Call us at Community Tax Service LLC if we can assist you at 419-560-5397.

Ohio Department of Taxation Warns of New Text Message
Scam Including Website Impersonation
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) is warning taxpayers about text messages falsely claiming to be from the department that leads recipients to a website impersonating ODT’s site.

The text message states, “Your tax refund request has been approved and is now pending release.” It asks recipients to finalize processing by clicking on the link provided to confirm their account details. The fraudulent link takes users to a webpage that mimics ODT’s page and improperly displays ODT’s logo and brandingImportant Reminders for Taxpayers:

ODT does not use text messaging to contact taxpayers about tax matters and does not request or disperse payment through text.

Here are some other important tips to keep in mind:

Do not click links or respond to suspicious texts.
Do not share personal or financial information via text.
Verify the web address. Taxation’s official website is tax.ohio.gov.
When in doubt, contact us through our official channels, found on tax.ohio.gov. Use the phone numbers and email options listed on our Contact Us page.
