🚨 A Friendly Reminder for Business Owners

Every year, I read Tax Court cases that remind me just how expensive “creative accounting” can become.

Recently, the U.S. Tax Court upheld significant tax deficiencies and penalties after finding that a business owner claimed personal expenses as business deductions and failed to properly report income. The end result? Years of audits, substantial taxes owed, penalties, and a lot of unnecessary stress.

At Lembo Accounting Solutions, our goal isn’t to find deductions at any cost—it’s to help you claim every deduction you’re legally entitled to while keeping your business compliant and audit-ready.

We know it can be tempting to write off expenses that “feel business-related,” but that’s exactly where many business owners get into trouble. We’d much rather have an honest conversation today than help you explain questionable deductions to the IRS years from now.

✅ We focus on accurate bookkeeping.
✅ We help you document deductions properly.
✅ We provide practical tax planning—not risky tax strategies.
✅ We care about protecting both your business and your peace of mind.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Can I deduct this?”—ask us first. That’s what we’re here for.

Your business deserves solid accounting, sound tax advice, and a CPA who puts compliance first.

📊 Mid-Year Check-In with Your Neighborhood CPA

We're halfway through the year, which makes this the perfect time to make sure there are no surprises waiting for you next tax season.

Here are a few things every South Carolina individual and business owner should be thinking about:

✅ South Carolina Tax Law Changes
Tax laws continue to evolve. Have you adjusted your payroll withholding or estimated tax payments to account for recent changes? A quick review now can help avoid an unexpected balance due later.

✅ Estimated Tax Payments
If you're self-employed, own an S corporation, partnership, or receive income without tax withholding, are you making your quarterly estimated tax payments? Missing or underpaying estimates can result in penalties and interest.

✅ Business Owners
Has your business changed this year? Maybe you've hired employees, purchased equipment, increased your income, or experienced slower sales. Mid-year is a great time to evaluate whether your tax strategy still fits your business.

✅ Life Changes Matter Too
Marriage, divorce, a new baby, retirement, buying or selling a home, or changes in investment income can all affect your tax situation.

A mid-year tax checkup is much easier—and often much less expensive—than trying to fix surprises after year-end.

If you're wondering whether you're on track, we'd be happy to review your situation and help you plan ahead.

Many business owners assume their Business Personal Property (BPP) filing is “set it and forget it.” Unfortunately, that’s often not the case.

Whether you’re a sole proprietor, LLC, partnership, or corporation, it’s important to periodically review:

✅ Assets that have been disposed of but are still being taxed
✅ New equipment that should be reported
✅ Vehicle exclusions that may apply
✅ Incorrect asset classifications
✅ Business closures or ownership changes
✅ Prior year filing errors

I’ve seen businesses overpay taxes simply because old assets remained on their account for years.

Even if your business is small, a quick review can help ensure you’re only paying what you actually owe.

Remember: South Carolina generally requires a BPP filing even if your business owns very little property, and there is often still a minimum taxable value calculation.

If you’re unsure whether your account is accurate, now is a great time to take a look before the next filing season.

Mount Pleasant friends — I normally don’t post things like this, but I’m trying to grow my little accounting firm this year and would really love to take on a few more bookkeeping clients locally.

This community has supported my business so much over the years, and I truly appreciate it more than people probably realize.

I know bookkeeping is one of those things business owners tend to push off because life gets busy, but I genuinely love helping people get organized, caught up, and feeling less stressed about their finances.

I’m not a huge corporate firm. It’s very personal for me. I care a lot about my clients and about doing things correctly.

If you know a local business owner in Mount Pleasant or Charleston who:
is overwhelmed with QuickBooks
behind on bookkeeping
unsure if things are accurate
or just wants someone responsive and trustworthy

…I’d be incredibly grateful if you sent them my way.

What is Business Personal Property Tax (BPP)… and why should you care? 👇

👉 It’s a tax on the stuff your business uses — not the building

What counts?
• Equipment
• Furniture
• Computers
• Machinery
• Tools

Here’s where people get tripped up 👇
This is a separate tax filing that’s required every year

And most business owners don’t realize:
👉 It’s often NOT included in your regular tax return

If you don’t file?
❌ The county estimates (usually high)
❌ You still get a bill
❌ Penalties + interest get added

Where this applies:
South Carolina, North Carolina, and many other states

Most people only learn about this when a bill shows up in the mail

Need help figuring out if this applies to you?
Send me a message — happy to walk through it with you.

South Carolina just passed a major tax law that will impact the 2026 tax year—and it’s not as simple as “tax cuts.”

While many taxpayers will benefit from lower rates, higher-income households may actually see an increase due to new deduction phase-outs and the elimination of itemized deductions.

I put together a quick video and a simple breakdown to help you understand what’s changing and how it could affect you.
