If your 2025 return is still on extension, “I’m waiting on a few things” is no longer specific enough.
By September, the useful question is: What exactly is keeping the return from being completed?
Maybe it is one K-1. A corrected 1099. Missing business records. A basis question. A document somebody else was supposed to send. Or a tax issue that still needs an answer.
For many individual taxpayers on extension, the federal filing deadline is October 15. However, certain taxpayers in designated Wisconsin disaster areas have federal deadlines postponed to November 2, 2026, and Wisconsin recognizes federal disaster filing extensions for corresponding state returns. Confirm which deadline applies to you.
Write down the blocker now:
• What exactly is missing?
• Who has the next action?
• Is a corrected document expected?
• Is there a tax question that has to be resolved before filing?
“Waiting” is vague. A named blocker gives you something you can actually follow up on.
