Intuit Connect is back, and so are we! 🎉

Kristen and Barbara will be at the conference October 26–28, learning everything new in QuickBooks and the integrated tools we use every day to keep your books running smoothly.

It's one of our favorite weeks of the year, a chance to dig into what's coming next, swap ideas with other bookkeepers, and bring it all back home to our clients.

Heads up: we'll still be checking in, but replies might be a touch slower than usual while we're there.

Even if your business is profitable, poor cash flow management can cause it to fail. 💸

For example, a restaurant may be packed every weekend. Sales are up. The P&L shows a healthy margin. But on Tuesday morning, there's not enough cash to pay the produce delivery or make payroll.

Why? The weekend revenue is still working its way through the payment system. Meanwhile, costs came due first: inventory, staff, and rent were all paid before the money from those busy nights actually landed.

The profit figure shows that you have money. So why are you staring at a bill, wondering where the money to pay it is going to come from?

Cash flow is what actually keeps your business alive, not profit. You can appear profitable on paper and still be short on cash. Maybe a large invoice hasn't been paid yet, or perhaps you stocked up on inventory or had a slower month than expected.

Try this: Once a month, look at what actually came in and what actually went out. Not what you're owed. Just the money that moved.

This small habit can prevent a lot of unpleasant surprises.

And this is the perfect moment to get our books in order before the holiday season comes.

Two things worth putting on your radar:

📌 October 15 = the filing deadline if you're on extension. Last big date on the tax calendar for most people.

📌 Q4 = catch-up time. If we've been asking you for documents, statements, or an answer to a question, now's the moment. And if something's changed in your business this year (new entity, new account, new hire) tell us now, not in January.

When things come in late, everything downstream gets delayed. We'd much rather bug you now than scramble later.

So if you've been meaning to get back to us, consider this your friendly nudge. 😉

Harvest season in Napa has a way of reminding you what this valley runs on. 🍇

Having grown up in this community, I know firsthand how hardworking the people of Napa are. There are the crews out in the vineyards before sunrise. The baristas at my favorite coffee shop who remember my order. The servers who make the busy dinner rush look easy. The shop owners and the folks behind the counters. The parents who work all day and still show up for practice, rehearsal, and everything in between.

This valley runs on people who show up.

So whether you're in the middle of crush or just in the middle of a busy week: we see you. We appreciate you. And we hope you find a little time to rest 🫶

Don't leave yourself for last.

Most business owners pay themselves whatever's left over. Sometimes, there's nothing left. Sound familiar?

We are too tied to the culture of self-sacrifice. You need to invest in growth, not suffer for growth. From experience, I know this tends to be easily solved with previous financial planning.

Flip it. Put your paycheck on the list with your other bills. It's just as important as rent, insurance, or payroll. Even if it's a small amount at first, make it consistent.

Treating your income as a fixed cost will help you build a business that actually supports you. It's not a business you're sacrificing for indefinitely. ❤️‍🩹

If your business collects sales tax, set up a separate account for it. That money trickles in a little at a time with every sale, but when the deadline hits, it adds up fast. And it's never a fun surprise when it's not there.

Collect it, move it, and don't touch it until it's due.

It's National Financial Awareness Day. So… Do you actually know where your P&L is? 📊

We'd say mid-August is the perfect time to do a pulse check. Books caught up? Numbers make sense? If tax time always feels like a surprise you saw coming but ignored anyway, you're not the only one.

No judgment. Most business owners didn't sign up to do their own bookkeeping. That's kind of the whole reason we're here.

The Napa Town & Country Fair is here, and for our family, that means JLAC week. 🐖

The Junior Livestock Advisory Committee show is Wednesday, and the auction follows on Saturday. My son Chase will be showing pigs, and I'll be at the fairgrounds all week, bookkeeper by trade, livestock mom by heart.

If you've never been, it's worth coming out. These kids work hard all year for this.

🗓️ Auction: Saturday, August 8, registration at 8am, auction starts at 9am
