Trump Accounts are now available for eligible children. These are a type of traditional individual retirement account (IRA), with special rules for contributions, investments, and withdrawals—not a regular savings account.
A few important details:
• Eligibility for an account is different from eligibility for the government contribution. Eligible children under age 18 with a valid Social Security number may have an account. The one-time $1,000 federal contribution is limited to eligible U.S. citizens born January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2028, and requires the applicable enrollment steps.
• Investment choices are restricted to qualifying low-cost mutual funds or ETFs tracking broad U.S. stock indexes. Investments can lose value; investment returns are not guaranteed.
• Contribution limits and withdrawal restrictions apply. These accounts should not be confused with readily accessible savings for a child’s near-term expenses. After age 18, traditional IRA rules generally apply.[investor]
Families should review the eligibility requirements, investment risks, tax considerations, and account restrictions before deciding whether to contribute.
