Updated to COVID-19 Plan

We are currently following the recommendations of Governor DeWine and Dr. Amy Acton and are working from our home office. We are working on a solution to forward our phones from the office to the home office. You can currently call the office and leave a message and we will do our best to respond within 24 hours. This afternoon we will be installing our new and more secure drop box. This drop box will be on the right of the double glass doors on the outside of the building. Our landlord has made the decision that he will be keeping the outside doors locked as well.

You can still get us your tax information via mail, drop box or through our secure portal. When we finish your taxes, we will be sending back via portal or priority mail.

The deadline has been pushed back to July 15th, 2020. The first and second quarter estimated payments for 2020 have also been pushed back to July 15th, 2020. We are still waiting on official word from the state about the state and city deadline.

During this different and difficult time, we appreciate your patience as we adapt to working in different ways. We appreciate all of our clients and we hope you are all staying healthy.

Tax Deadline Extended
It was announced today, March 20th, 2020, that the Federal tax deadline has been extended to July 15th. The State of Ohio has not made a formal announcement yet; however, they have previously stated they would mirror the federal guidance. Under Ohio law the due date of municipalities tax returns is tied to the Ohio deadline. Therefore, if Ohio changes the deadline to file an Ohio return to July 15th, all city returns will also be extended to July 15th.

One thing that is unsure at the current time is if the deadline to make contributions to IRA and self-employed retirement accounts has also been extended. We will keep you up to date on this as we know more.

What does that mean for your taxes? We are still working to get all the tax returns done that are in our office and those that will still come in. As mentioned in earlier communication we are suspending all in person meetings as well as drop off and pick up of taxes. If you prefer to meet with us or drop off and pick up your taxes as opposed to mailing, then you can wait until we resume meeting clients in person. We are not sure when this will happen but will keep you up to date.

As always if you have any questions please reach out to us via email at [email protected] or via phone at 614-471-1040. We are still in the office most days and can answer the phones. If the Governor orders a shelter in place or quarantine order, we will still be working on your taxes from our home office. If that happens, we will try to forward our phone to our house so that we can still answer your calls.

03/17/2020

I wanted to keep you up to date on what is happening in regard to the tax deadline and the COVID-19 pandemic. Today (March 17th) the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that the tax deadline would remain April 15th, 2020. However, if you owe taxes you will have an extra 90 days to pay those taxes without incurring interest or penalties. An extension of time to file can still be filed as has been done in any other year.

The above only applies to the Federal return. States can make their own decision on what they will do. Since most of our clients are in Ohio, we want to let you know that Ohio has not yet to make any announcements. If you do not reside in Ohio and you have a question about your state please email Kyle at [email protected] and he can look it up for you.

When we sent out our organizer’s we indicated that we would need to have your information in our office by March 27th, 2020 to try and get your taxes done by the April 15th deadline. If your information comes in after March 27th, 2020, we will file an extension of time to file on your behalf.

Topy Tax and Accounting Response to COVID-19:

As a small business owner, it can be difficult to decide how to handle times of uncertainty. Public health leaders and Governor DeWine have made it clear that social distancing is a critical step in attempting to slow the spread of COVID-19. They are encouraging all businesses, regardless of size, to do their part to practice social distancing to limit the risk of exposure.

As you know, we are a family business, and many of our clients fall in the at-risk categories. The safety of our clients and our family is of utmost importance. Based on the recommendations of Governor DeWine and the Ohio Society of CPA’s we are implementing changes to our operating process. Effective Monday March 16th we will be accepting tax returns preparation materials in the following ways: Drop off in our secure drop box (we have ordered a more secure drop box and will install it as soon as it ships to us) which will be checked daily. You can also mail (or UPS or FEDEX) your tax documents or send them through our secure portal (which we can send you a secure link to set up an account if you do not already have one). When your tax return is done we will contact you to see if you would like us to mail it to you (we will mail them out priority mail with tracking) or we can send back through our secure portal. At this time, we will not be offering in person meetings or drop off and pickup in our office. If you feel we need to discuss your tax situation in person we can set up a phone call, Skype or FaceTime. We can also exchange emails. If you would like to set up a phone call, Skype or FaceTime please call the office to schedule.

Please understand that we are not suspending operations, we are just taking the hard but necessary precautions. We will still be working to get your tax returns finished for you. There is talk in Washington D.C. right now that the deadline will be extended. The Ohio Society of CPA’s has been working with Governor DeWine’s office and has recommended that the deadline be moved to October 15th, without the need to file an extension. They are also proposing to waive the late payment penalty and interest through October 15th. Again, these are not in effect yet, but we will keep you up to date.

To keep up to date on our response to COVID 19 as well as tax deadlines please refer to our website (www.topytax.com) as well as our page (Topy Tax and Accounting).

We can still be reached via phone at 614-471-1040, however the fastest way to get a hold of us is via email at [email protected] or through our page. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us. We hope that you and your family stay safe during this trying time for our state and nation. We all need to do our part to keep our family, friends, neighborhoods and communities safe.
