Although we make every effort to open our office daily, this may be a case of where safety is more important. In case driving conditions are treacherous, we may close early or not open until Friday morning as the safety of our clients and staff is paramount.

What your tax preparer really wants you to bring in for your tax return.

We know that tax time can be stressful and tax payers want to be sure they have everything for their preparer. There are some things that we definitely need and other things that we do not. The following is a helpful list of items that we need or are looking for, but not necessarily everything we will need:

For personal returns -W-2’s, 1095-A, subsidized Health Insurance, CT Access Health NOT CT Husky, 1098’s from all sources, 1099’s (including Social Security) for all sources, HSA distributions (1099), energy efficient receipts for your home, correct contact for the tax payer and correct dependent information.

For business returns (Schedule C) – Everything from the above, PLUS - a P & L (profit & loss) with totals only, (please try avoid spreadsheets as they can be confusing and very large to navigate), vehicle information, home office information.

For rental property – the above information, as well as, depreciation on the property if we did not handle your return last year.

Please note that this is not a complete list of information needed, as it will depend on your financial situation. If you have questions, please call us for help at 860.738.1040 and we will be happy to answer your questions.

Have a sparkling day!

Thank you!!

Hello friends! It's almost that time of the year....tax time! We are always looking to provide valuable information to our clients. Today will be on how to spot a "ghost/fraudulent tax preparer". These people make our job much harder and if we can save one person from someone like this, then our day has been made. A fraudulent preparer is as follows:

Ask for payment in cash (untraceable).
Does not give you a receipt.
Fees are based on a percentage of the anticipated refund.
Wants YOUR refund deposited into THEIR bank account.
Marks your return as "self-prepared" instead of their name or the firm name.
Refuses to sign the return or does NOT have a PTIN (both are required on tax returns).
Asks you to sign a blank or incomplete tax return.
Files the return without allowing you to review it.
Promises BIG REFUNDs with knowing your complete financial situation.
Doesn't provide you with a final copy of the tax return.
Files the tax return on-line under your name and email address, using commercial software and their name is no where to be found.

The worst part of a ghost preparer, is the mistakes made or fraudulent entries, that are made by them are reflected on your return and they will not stand behind the return. You have no recourse against someone like this.

Always go to a reputable tax/accounting firm to ensure a proper return is submitted.

Preparers like us, here at Foothills Tax Service, take continuing education classes, are registered with the IRS, licensed and insured. We strive to provide top notch services all year long.
