What exactly is the no tax on tips new this year?

Employees and self-employed individuals may deduct qualified tips received in certain qualified occupations, such as wait staff, bartenders, salon workers, personal trainers, gig economy workers, and many more who customarily and regularly receive tips might qualify.

Taxpayers may be able to claim a deduction for qualified tips paid to them in 2025 that are included on Form W-2, Form 1099-NEC, Form 1099-MISC, Form 1099-K, or reported directly by them on Form 4137.

“Qualified tips” are voluntary cash or charged tips received from customers or through tip sharing
Maximum annual deduction is $25,000; for self-employed, deduction may not exceed individual’s net income, without regard to this deduction, from the trade or business in which the tips were earned.
The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers)

If you earn overtime pay at work, you may be able to deduct up to $12,500 of qualified overtime compensation on your federal income tax return (up to $25,000 for married people filing a joint return). Married Filing Separately CAN NOT TAKE THE DEDUCTION!

The overtime deduction is gradually phased out – potentially to $0 – if your modified adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers).

Despite the “No Tax on Overtime” label, the overtime deduction does not completely eliminate taxes on overtime pay. Some people may still owe federal and/or state income tax on their overtime pay, and payroll taxes still apply to it.

The deduction amount may be listed in block 14 of you W2, a letter from your employer stating the OT Premium Amount or lastly your last paystub of 2025 will be needed and must be listed as 1.5 OT or Double Time. The amounts aren’t fully deductible just the premium
OT which would be 1/3 or 1/4 of the amount depending on which OT you worked.

The overtime deduction is temporary – it only applies for the 2025 to 2028 tax years.

This tax season has been confusing for a lot of tax payers. Today's clarification that seems to come across many times a day with clients is the $6,000 Tax Credit For individuals 65 and over.

Starting with the 2025 tax year (filed in 2026), taxpayers aged 65 and older may claim a new, additional $6,000 "senior bonus" deduction ($12,000 for married couples if both qualify), reducing taxable income. THIS IS NOT A DIRECT REFUND but a deduction for federal income taxes available through 2028.
$6,000 Senior Deduction:
Eligibility: You must be 65 or older by Dec. 31, 2025, and have a Social Security number.
Income Limit: The deduction phases out for those with a Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) over $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (married filing jointly).
How it Works: This deduction is in addition to the standard deduction and existing extra standard deduction for seniors.
Claiming: It is claimed on federal income tax returns using Schedule 1-A (Form 1040).

Sorry but it is not an additional $6,000 or $12,000 in your tax refund, nor will you get it if you don't get a refund or lessen the amount you may owe.
