That “IRS refund” text on your phone may actually be an attempt to steal your identity.

Scammers send messages claiming that:

“Your refund is waiting.”

“Your tax account must be verified.”

“You qualify for a new tax credit.”

The message then asks you to click a link, enter personal information, or make an immediate payment.

The IRS does not send unexpected text messages with links to claim a refund.

The IRS also will not contact you through social media to request your Social Security number, bank information, or tax records.

If you receive a suspicious message:

Do not click the link.

Do not reply.

Delete the message.

Verify any real tax issue through your official IRS Online Account or a trusted tax professional.

Have you received a fake IRS text before?

Your 2026 paycheck withholding may be based on a tax situation that has already changed.

More overtime, a second job, 1099 income, marriage, a new child, rental income, or changes in your spouse’s earnings can affect how much tax should be paid during the year.

The IRS says midyear is a good time to review your withholding instead of waiting until tax season.

The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator has also been updated to reflect recent tax-law changes, including qualified overtime and other deductions and credits.

A large refund is not always the only goal.

The goal is to avoid an unexpected tax bill while keeping the right amount in each paycheck.

Which would concern you more?

A . Owing money at tax time

B . Having too much withheld all year

You can have taxes taken from every paycheck—and still owe money because of your side income.

This often happens when someone has:

✅ A regular W-2 job
✅ Overtime or a second job
✅ 1099, freelance, or gig income
✅ Rental or small-business income

Here is what many workers do not realize:

You may be able to increase the federal withholding from your W-2 paycheck instead of making separate quarterly payments for your side income.

The right option depends on your income, expenses, filing status, and current withholding.

Which would you rather do?

A — Take a little extra from each paycheck
B — Make quarterly tax payments

Working more overtime doesn’t always mean enough tax is being withheld from every paycheck.

If your income has changed because of overtime, a second job, side income, marriage, dependents, or your spouse’s earnings, this is a good time to review your withholding not after the year is over.

A midyear tax review can help you understand whether your current withholding still matches your overall tax situation.

Receiving a 1099 does not automatically mean you will owe a large tax bill.

Unlike W-2 employees, taxes usually are not withheld from 1099 income. However, eligible business expenses such as mileage, supplies, software, phone costs, and a qualifying home office may reduce your taxable business income.

Every tax situation is different, and proper recordkeeping can make a major difference.
