A new month and a new season are approaching.

September can be a useful time to revisit the financial priorities you set earlier in the year. Consider asking:

• Which goals have progressed?
• What has changed since January?
• Are there financial tasks that still need attention?
• What would you like to address before year-end?

A financial plan should evolve as your life, responsibilities and priorities change.

Most of us have heard about someone being scammed. Still, it’s easy to think, “That would never happen to me.”

The truth is that scams are increasingly sophisticated and can reach us through emails, texts and even unexpected packages. A few warning signs to keep in mind:

• An unordered package containing an unfamiliar QR code. Scanning it could lead to a phishing website or download malicious software.

• An unexpected email claiming your Social Security statement is ready. Instead of clicking a link, type ssa.gov/myaccount directly into your browser.

• Any message that pressures you to act immediately, provide personal information or send money.

Pause before you click, scan or respond. When something feels unexpected, verify it through an official website or phone number. Staying informed and sharing warning signs with friends and family can help everyone reduce their risk.

Receiving an inheritance can create both opportunities and new responsibilities.

Before making major decisions, it may help to take time to understand:

• The types of assets received
• Whether taxes may apply
• Required timelines or distribution rules
• How the inheritance affects existing goals
• Whether funds should be invested, saved, gifted or used to reduce debt
• How the decision fits within the family’s estate plan

An inheritance does not always require an immediate decision. Organizing the details first can help create a more thoughtful path forward.

The final four months of the year can move quickly.

Before fall schedules become crowded, consider reviewing the financial tasks you may want to address before year-end:

• Retirement account contributions
• Required distributions, when applicable
• Charitable giving plans
• Education funding
• Beneficiary information
• Insurance enrollment decisions
• Tax-planning questions
• Family gifting intentions

Starting early can provide more time to gather information and coordinate with your financial, tax and legal professionals.

Retirement planning is not simply choosing the year you would like to stop working.

It may also involve evaluating:

• How much income your lifestyle may require
• When different income sources may begin
• How healthcare expenses could change
• Whether your investment strategy reflects your time horizon
• How taxes may affect withdrawals
• What financial responsibilities you may have to family members

These decisions are often connected, which is why retirement planning can benefit from an ongoing review process.

Market ups and downs are a normal part of investing, but they can make it tempting to react based on emotion rather than strategy.

During periods of volatility, it's important to keep your long-term goals in focus and revisit the financial plan you've built. Staying informed and making thoughtful decisions can help you navigate changing market conditions without losing sight of what matters most.

Market uncertainty is a constant companion for investors.

Divorce can involve more than dividing current assets.

Financial decisions made during the process may affect retirement income, taxes, housing, insurance and long-term financial goals.

Questions to discuss with the appropriate professionals may include:

• How will retirement assets be handled?
• What are the potential tax consequences of different assets?
• Can the current housing arrangement be maintained?
• Do beneficiary designations need to change?
• How should future cash flow and expenses be evaluated?

Financial, tax and legal professionals can each play different roles during this process.
