Lionel Messi was voted Thursday the inaugural winner of the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.

Barcelona's Argentina striker beat club team-mate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo in a poll of 53 sports journalists representing each of the UEFA member associations.

"I'd like to thank all the people that voted for me, and all my team-mates," Messi said at the awards ceremony in Monaco.

"I keep all these awards at home and I still have some space for more. It's an honour to be so successful and to come up with the goods at the right time. Thanks to my team-mates for helping me achieve this."

Messi, 24, scored scored 53 goals last season, including 12 in the Champions League, where he finished as the top scorer for the third season in succession, scoring in the 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the final.

Four Barcelona players were in the top 10, with Andres Iniesta fourth and Gerard Pique joint eighth.

Porto's Falcao was fifth, the Manchester United pair Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic sixth and seventh, Zlatan Ibrahimovic of AC Milan alongside Pique in eighth and Germany keeper Manuel Neuer, who has moved from Schalke to Bayern Munich, 10th.

Lionel Messi scored one goal and created another as Champions League winners Barcelona lifted their fourth European Super Cup trophy on Friday with a 2-0 victory over Porto who finished with nine men.

An awful back pass in the 39th minute by Colombia midfielder Fredy Guarin was intercepted by Messi and the Argentina forward slotted the ball in to the net after showing masterful balance to sidestep goalkeeper Helton.

Europa League winners Porto fell further behind after 88 minutes when Messi chipped a pass and substitute Cesc Fabregas controlled the ball with his chest before firing in.

Rolando was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 86th minute and Porto team mate Guarin received a straight red card four minutes later for lunging at Javier Mascherano.

Barca, who will make a delayed start to their domestic league season when they meet Villarreal on Monday, have now collected two major trophies in 10 days following their Spanish Super Cup triumph over arch-rivals Real Madrid.

"It was tough to beat Porto, they are a great team," captain Xavi told Spanish television. "The pitch was not in good condition, they are a very physical side and pressed us high up.

"We maybe weren't as superior as in other matches but ... it's another European title that fills us with excitement. This team is making history and we believe we can still win more trophies."

BEST IN EUROPE

Messi, named on Thursday as the inaugural winner of UEFA's Best Player in Europe award, continued where he left off last season -- a campaign that yielded 53 goals.

Barca also showed they are not a one-man team and even without injured centre backs Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol they looked strong all over the pitch.

They needed to be at their best too, especially when Hulk twice went close for Porto in the opening 12 minutes.

Barca, who started with nine of the team that beat Manchester United 3-1 in the Champions League final at Wembley in May, gradually wrested control of the midfield.

Andres Iniesta, man of the match at Wembley, again controlled proceedings in midfield with Xavi and Seydou Keita.

Pedro and David Villa posed their usual threat up front but Porto, acclaimed for playing a similar style of attacking soccer to Barca, were always in the game and gave plenty of reasons to believe they will do well in this season's Champions League.

"We played well and gave big problems to a great Barcelona side who many people consider to be the best team in the world," coach Vitor Pereira told Portuguese television.

"We don't live on moral victories but I leave here satisfied with my team. We had a good first half and even after the first goal we came into the second half with a will to turn it around and had some chances."

Barcelona confirmed their elegant domination of European football on Friday by beating Porto 2-0 in the European Super Cup showpiece in Monte Carlo on Friday.

Lionel Messi was the star of the show despite a horrible pitch in the Stade Louis II, scoring Barca's first goal and setting up the second for supersub Cesc Fabregas.

Porto, spirited but limited, sorely lacked Radamel Falcao, top scorer in the Europa League last season, who has just been sold to Atletico Madrid.

The Portuguese champions lost their discipline at the end and had Ronaldo and Freddy Guarin sent off, for desperate fouls on Messi and Javier Mascherano.

The Super Cup is the curtain-raiser for the European football season, played between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League.

The triumph left Pep Guardiola as the most successful Barca coach ever, with 12 major trophies in his astonishing three-year reign. It also left playmaker Xavi as the Barca player with most trophies ever, 18 now in his immaculate career.

Xavi said that "it was a difficult game, partly due to the pitch. Also, they are a good team. We were not as superior as on other occasions."

The little midfield maestro added: "We are making history, and we just want to continue working hard and making people happy. This is a great epoch that we are enjoying."

Meanwhile, Mascherano said: "The important thing tonight was to win, this is another trophy for us. We are showing a lot of ambition, and maybe what we are doing is unrepeatable."

Porto's Brazilian striker Hulk, for his part, bemoaned the fact that "we didn't take our chances tonight. They are a very good team, but it would have been a different match if we had managed to score."

Xavi and company lacked their usual rhythm and fluency, in part due to a horrible pitch in the Stade Louis II, but were always in the driving seat. Porto made an aggressive start, pressing Barca powerfully in midfield, and Barca keeper Victor Valdes had to make an early save from Joao Moutinho.

However, Porto's game plan went up in smoke six minutes from half time when the Colombian youngster unintentionally Guarin set up Messi with a horrendous back-pass.

Messi - on Thursday voted the most important player in last season's European competitions - calmly skipped around keeper Helton and made it 1-0 with his sweet left foot.

The Super Cup was the only club competition in which the FIF World Player had not yet scored - until Friday.

Barca dominated possession in the second half but Porto refused to give up. Guarin forced a sharp save from Valdes with a low drive. Twelve minutes from time Porto were unlucky not to be given a penalty when Eric Abidal clumsily hacked down Guarin.

Four minutes from time, Messi cleverly set up Fabregas with a precise lob and the former Arsenal captain controlled with his chest and made it 2-0 with a calm volley.

Fabregas has enjoyed a sensational start since finally joining Barca two weeks ago, after his prolonged transfer saga. He has already picked up two major trophies, the Super Cups of both Spain and Europe.

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol trained with his team mates on Saturday for the first time since a knee operation at the beginning of June, the Spanish and European champions said.

The Spain defender's return comes two days before Barca, who beat Porto 2-0 to win the European Super Cup on Friday, begin their quest for a club record-equalling fourth straight La Liga title at home to Villarreal.

Barca's Brazil left back, Adriano, has a muscle injury and will miss the game at the Nou Camp, the club said in a separate statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.cat).

Cesc Fabregas
Barcelona players Victor Valdes and Gerard Pique on Friday said they were delighted that Cesc Fabregas is set to return to the club after eight years at Premier League club Arsenal.

Fabregas, who left Barca for Arsenal aged 16, is poised to rejoin the European champions for a fee of around 40 million euros (56.8 million dollars), including variables and objectives.

The long-awaited deal was expected to be announced later on Friday. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Friday did not include Fabregas in his squad for the Premier League opener against Newcastle United.

"I think that today (Friday) is going to be a great day for the club. I think we are signing a great player, one made here, the kind of player liked by the coach and by the fans. He will quickly adapt to our playing system," said the goalkeeper Valdes.

"He (Fabregas) is one of the best midfielders in the world, and it will be a honour to have him in our team."

Defender Pique, for his part, tweeted on Friday in English: "Today is gonna be a great day! I'm a bit nervous."

Pique is one of Fabregas' best friends and, like him, returned to Barca after a spell in England - in his case at Manchester United.

According to the Catalan media, Fabregas will travel with the Barca squad to Sunday's Super Cup first leg away to Real Madrid, without being in the squad. But he will likely be included by coach Pep Guardiola for the return game on Wednesday.
