So why not address extended care during settlement discussions? Divorce planning shouldn’t focus solely on dividing today’s assets. It should also safeguard tomorrow’s independence and dignity.

The cost of extended care can significantly impact retirement assets. Without planning, one health event can erode years of careful financial preparation.

Many people don’t realize this: Extended care insurance policies are often less expensive for couples than for individuals. Some couples’ policies include shared or enhanced benefits that aren't available when someone applies as an individual.

As individuals move forward independently, important questions arise such as:

- If extended care is needed, who will provide it?
- Will staying at home be an option?
- Can daily living tasks be managed without consistent assistance?
- What if only part-time or informal help is required, such as cooking, cleaning, or transportation?

These aren’t hypothetical concerns. They are practical realities for individuals entering retirement years alone.

Many private institutions use the CSS Profile, which often:
- Requires financial information from both biological parents, regardless of custody
- May include stepparent income
- Uses its own institutional formulas

This can significantly change aid eligibility, even if one parent has primary custody.

Custody also impacts valuable federal tax benefits, including:
- The American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)
- The Lifetime Learning Credit
- Child-related tax credits

The parent who claims the child as a dependent typically receives these credits. Without clear direction in the divorce decree, disputes can arise just when tuition bills are due.

For most colleges and universities that use the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), financial aid eligibility is determined based on the income of the custodial parent (the parent that the child lives with for a majority of the time). In addition, the FAFSA considers the custodial parent's assets and, if remarried, the custodial parent's spouse's income. If the lower-income parent is the custodial parent during key high school years, financial aid eligibility may improve. Timing matters because FAFSA uses a “prior-prior year” tax system.

Planning for this is essential. You will need to assess your benefits versus spousal benefits now and in the future. You will need to decide if it’s more important to receive a higher benefit today or a higher benefit tomorrow.

If you were married for 10 years or longer, you may qualify for what Social Security calls divorced spousal benefits. If eligible, you can receive up to 50% of your ex-spouse’s full retirement age (FRA) benefit amount without reducing your ex-spouse’s benefit. If you’re wondering how Social Security can pay both, it’s in the rules.

Social Security is one of the most stable sources of lifetime income, and the rules for divorcees can significantly change. Social Security is only one part of the total financial plan. Understanding how to incorporate Social Security into decision-making can affect multiple facets, such as spousal support needs and long-term planning.
