North Berwick Income Tax Service

North Berwick Income Tax Service Preparing individual income tax returns and helping small business owners streamline their financial systems for more consistent cash flow since 1972

We prepare individual and small business income tax returns, and also payroll services. Our office hours are by appointment, but during tax season you will almost always find someone at the office Monday-Saturday 9-5. Have we done your return before? Feel free to drop your taxes off at the office anytime--if we're not there, just pop it through the mail slot with your phone number on it. If you gi

ve us a call and don't reach us, we record your phone number on caller ID and will call you back as soon as possible. There is no answering machine (you will likely hear the fax machine after 4 rings); after struggling through deciphering messages on the machine, we have decided that this works better for us.

After taking a few days off to recover from 3.5 months of consecutive work days, we are back at it! We are currently working on extensions, but as we do during the regular season, we are completing returns in the order in which they were dropped off.

As paperwork was dropped off we noted the date on the front of the envelope. This is Dot's extension box (box turned around to protect the guilty); Merton has 2 of these. We will be completing returns in the order in which they were dropped off. As extensions started after 3/15, we are tackling from 3/16 onwards. If you dropped off on 4/14, please don't call us for a status report. Your return WILL be completed as soon as we get to it, but please note: we are NOT working 7 days a week until they are done. The deadline for extensions is October 15, but your return should be completed well before that. We will call you when they are completed. Thank you for your patience.

What your accountant wishes you’d done first, and not just at tax time.

Here’s how to set it up:

- Start by setting up clear income and cost of goods sold (COGS) accounts at the top of your chart of accounts.

Include sales or revenue, returns, and other income, along with COGS accounts like purchases, direct labor, materials, and inventory if applicable.

- Use expense accounts that line up with common tax deductions to simplify filing.

- Keep owner, payroll, and tax related accounts separate so nothing gets mixed or misreported

- Skip overusing the “Miscellaneous” account. Lumping too many expenses into a catch-all category makes it harder to track deductions accurately.

- Review and adjust your chart of accounts as your business changes and grows

A tax ready chart of accounts keeps reports clear, tax prep smooth, and communication with your accountant easier.

If you’re not sure whether your chart of accounts is set up the right way, book a call and let’s make sure it’s truly tax ready.

2025 was our busiest season ever. In order to better service our clients in 2026 (and to lessen the stress of tax season for us), we are implementing new drop off deadlines for our clients.

If returns are dropped off by our applicable deadlines in the office, they will be completed first come, first serve.

For any returns dropped off after these deadlines, we can only guarantee that extensions will be filed by the return deadlines. Following the last day of tax season, we usually take a few days off and then we are back to work completing extensions. Extensions for S Corps and Partnerships expire around Sept 15 each year; 1040 and 1041 extensions expire around October 15.

We understand that sometimes information isn't always available by March 15, but if most of your information is dropped off by the deadlines we will considered them "on time." Please make a note of whatever information is missing so we know not to complete your return.

Here are a few things you can do now to stay ahead:

- Log in to or create your IRS online account to view tax records, make payments, access notices, and manage your information securely

- Start gathering and organizing your tax records so nothing is missed and filing delays are avoided

- Watch for important income documents like W2s and 1099s, including income from side work, gig platforms, digital assets, unemployment, and refund interest

- Include contact information with all packets.

Getting organized early helps ensure a smoother filing process, fewer errors, and less stress overall.
