Hard to imagine now, but this was reality.
A $10 bill wasn’t just paper. It was a claim on gold.
This 1928 $10 note literally states:
‘Redeemable in gold on demand at any Federal Reserve Bank.’
Next to it is a 1932 $10 gold coin, the very thing that note could be redeemed for.
One held the value. The other represented it.
So the real question isn’t what changed…
