When is the last time you updated your W-4 at work??
If you’re a W2 employee, this is IMPORTANT! Your W-4 determines how much federal tax is withheld from each paycheck. I’ve seen so many people end up owing the IRS or getting a lesser refund than expected because this form wasn’t filled out properly.
Step 1: Filing Status – choose Single, Married Filing Separately, or Married Filing Jointly. Tip: Even if you’re married, selecting Single will increase your withholding and can help prevent owing. Do not select Head of Household unless you truly qualify as it can result in too little taxes coming out.
Step 2: Multiple Jobs of Spouse Works – check this if you have more than one job, your spouse works, or if you usually owe taxes at the end of the year. It helps your withholding match your actual tax bill.
Step 3: Claiming Dependents – Play it SAFE! Even if you have (2) dependents, claiming (1) or even zero will help make sure you’re not underpaying. If you overpay, it just means a bigger REFUND!
Step 4: Other Adjustments box 4c Extra Withholding – if you find you are owing the IRS at the end of the year, you can always ask your employer to withhold an additional amount from each paycheck to ensure you are covered for the year. Again, if you overpay, it just means a bigger REFUND!
