As we approach the end of the year, make a plan to collect and keep all of your tax documents in one designated place, like a basket on your kitchen counter, where you’ll be able to retrieve them when you’re ready for tax preparation. If you received overtime pay or tip income in 2025, include a copy of your final pay stub showing your 2025 year-to-date income breakdown (not the final 2025 pay period paid in 2026, but your actual paycheck that you received IN 2025), and if possible, obtain documentation from your employer with your total taxable tip income and the total of the PREMIUM pay you received from overtime, as these are the amounts you will be able to deduct from your taxable income when preparing your tax return for 2025. Attention Small Business Owners!

There are just over 5 months remaining in 2025. Are you business books/records up to date and categorized right now? If you needed to provide a Profit & Loss statement to a bank, investor, or lawyer today, would you be able to quickly and easily produce that information? If you’re a new S-corp, do you know if any distributions you’ve taken year-to-date are in line with your payroll earnings to be in compliance with income requirements for your entity type by year end, without putting your business in a negative position? Are these questions making you wonder what the heck I’m talking about?

If you’re not sure about any of this, please reach out to me to discuss the financial health of your business. I can help you become better organized and knowledgeable on the financial health of your business and prepare you for tax season so you’re not scrambling to get things together next spring. There’s still time to talk about and act on tax strategies to finish out 2025 to your best advantage. Be wary of TurboTax asking “We just need your OK on a couple of things.” If you agree in this section of doing your return with TurboTax, you’re allowing them to share your salary information, your student loan debt, including whether or not you got a tax break for your student loans, mortgage information, the amount of your refund, and the day you printed your tax return. If you want to keep your tax return information private and save yourself from more internet ads, chose NO THANKS in this section of TurboTax. Or, contact a tax professional like me to do your tax returns and ensure your tax info is secure and private!

“We just need your OK on a couple of things,” TurboTax says as you prepare your tax return. That’s your red flag to watch out.
