W.T.F. Wednesday 👀
The IRS has been heavily promoting its expanded Business Tax Account, including access for eligible sole proprietors with EINs.
Well, I'm a Schedule C business owner.
I have an EIN.
I accessed the Business Tax Account.
And here's my W.T.F. moment:
Where are my informational documents filed under my BUSINESS EIN?🤔
For example, if someone issues my business a 1099 using my EIN, you might reasonably assume I could log into my Business Tax Account and see the information the IRS received under that EIN.
Nope.
The IRS itself acknowledges that Schedule C information isn't displayed inside the Business Tax Account. Schedule C remains connected to your individual income-tax account because ultimately it's filed with Form 1040.
So yes—the IRS can say eligible sole proprietors have access to a Business Tax Account.
But here's my question:
What good is calling it a BUSINESS Tax Account if I can't see some of the very information being reported to the IRS under my business EIN?
THAT is the W.T.F. 😂
And this isn't just me being picky.
For a Schedule C taxpayer trying to verify income reporting, investigate a mismatch, prepare an accurate return, or figure out why the IRS thinks income was omitted, being able to see what third parties reported under the business EIN matters.
Access to an account and access to the information a taxpayer actually needs are not the same thing.
W.T.F. Wednesday.
