The Do's and Don’ts for Taxpayers Who Get a Letter from the IRS

Every year the IRS mails millions of letters to taxpayers for many reasons. Here are some tips and suggestions for taxpayers who receive one:

1) Don’t ignore it. Most IRS letters and notices are about federal tax returns or tax accounts. Each notice deals with a specific issue and includes specific instructions on what to do.

2) Don’t panic. The IRS and its authorized private collection agencies do send letters by mail. Most of the time all the taxpayer needs to do is read the letter carefully and take the appropriate action.

3) Do take timely action. A notice may reference changes to a taxpayer’s account, taxes owed, a payment request or a specific issue on a tax return. Taking action timely could minimize additional interest and penalty charges.

4) Do review the information. If a letter is about a changed or corrected tax return, the taxpayer should review the information and compare it with the original return. If the taxpayer agrees, they should make notes about the corrections on their personal copy of the tax return, and keep it for their records.

5) Don’t reply unless instructed to do so. There is usually no need for a taxpayer to reply to a notice unless specifically instructed to do so. On the other hand, taxpayers who owe should reply with a payment. IRS.gov has information about payment options.

6) Do respond to a disputed notice. If a taxpayer does not agree with the IRS, they should mail a letter explaining why they dispute the notice. They should mail it to the address on the contact stub at the bottom of the notice. The taxpayer should include information and documents for the IRS to review when considering the dispute. The taxpayer should allow at least 30 days for the IRS to respond.

7) Do remember that there is usually no need to call the IRS. If a taxpayer must contact the IRS by phone, they should use the number in the upper right-hand corner of the notice. The taxpayer should have a copy of the tax return and letter when calling.

*) Do avoid scams. The IRS will never initiate contact using social media or text message. The first contact from the IRS usually comes in the mail. Taxpayers who are unsure if they owe money to the IRS can view their tax account information on IRS.gov.

For 2024, April 15 is the big tax filing deadline. But other deadlines, such as when certain tax forms need to be furnished, are worth noting as well. Use this tax calendar to help you be aware of some of the approaching deadlines.

A FEW TAX TIPS TO HELP EASE INTO THE SEASON.

💥If you haven’t already funded your retirement account, you have until tax filing deadline to do so. Making a deductible contribution can help minimize your tax liability. ⚖️
💥If you anticipate owing taxes, you can make estimated quarterly payments to lessen the blow at filing time. However, you do not want to overpay. 💵
💥Ask your tax preparer if they have a checklist 🗒️that will help you be prepared when you arrive.
💥While for most, the standard deduction is more advantageous than itemizing, 🧾it is still worth a conversation with your tax preparer to make sure.
💥If you have a home business, 🗄️do not be afraid to take the home office 🗂️deduction. Ask your tax preparer what qualifies your space as a home office 🗂️so you can gather that information ahead of time.
💥File or pay on time. 💳The filing date for this year is April 15, 2024. 🗓️If you can’t have your information gathered on time, file a Form 4868 to give yourself a 6 month extension.
💥File electronically. You will get your refund three to six weeks quicker. ‼️

Please feel free to send a Facebook message, text message, or call if you have questions.

Preparing for tax filing should not be a daunting task. With just a few tips, you can remain organized and calm during this filing season. 🧐

💥Most of your needed statements 📝 relating to income and interest will arrive during January and February. 📆 Keep a box or 📁 where you sort your mail to drop “important tax documents .”
💥Be watching your in box for notifications from mortgage companies or other financial providers that will have their information available on your online account. Create a separate folder on your computer and move the files over as they come in.
💥Think deductions throughout the year. Your bank statements 📄 hold a lot of key information that could be easily highlighted (or copied to your computer file). Examples would be charitable donations, medical expenses, or gambling winnings and losses.
💥Keeping a mileage log in your car 🚗 will allow you to easily log miles for volunteer, work, or medical. If paper isn’t for you, there are many apps 📱 that track your mileage. They are user friendly and some allow you to click start/stop documenting the mileage for you.

Your tax return is one of your most valuable documents. You need information from this document for student loans or banks loans. The IRS can amend tax returns back three years. However, if they audit one of the “three” years, they could deem it necessary to see information from years prior so it doesn’t hurt to keep 5-7 year’s information to be safe.

TAXPAYERS SHOULD AVOID THESE MISTAKES WHEN FILING THEIR RETURNS:

💥 Filing too early (make sure the IRS is accepting returns)
💥 Missing or inaccurate social security numbers on your supporting documents or actual return
💥 Misspelled names
💥Inaccurate information/amounts on your income documents (Review what you receive)
💥Incorrect filing status
💥Incorrect bank account number

Any of the above can delay your potential refund or flag your return for needed information by the IRS.
