“Your business is worthless.”

I still remember hearing those words from a business coach a few years into my entrepreneurial journey.

At the time, I was working with a coach that had a strong sales and marketing background, lots of years of experience. Much of his advice was very helpful.

But one conversation shaped my thinking in the wrong direction for years. When talking about starting with the end in mind, he said:

“Since you’re a service business, you really won’t have anything to sell someday. Make all the money you can while you’re running it.”

That mindset quietly shaped me for years.

It pushed me toward:
• Short-term thinking
• Founder dependence
• Scarcity
• Survival mode

But then something changed.

I started learning from other business owners.
Other mentors.
Other industries.
Other perspectives.

And I realized…

One mentor can help you.
One mentor can also unintentionally limit you.

Because service businesses absolutely create value when they build:
• Strong systems
• Recurring revenue
• Healthy culture
• Great leadership
• Loyal clients
• Teams that operate beyond the founder

That truth was reinforced not long ago when friends of mine sold their service-based company for more than $100 million.

They didn’t just build income. They built an enterprise.

Proverbs 15:22 says: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

The goal isn’t finding one person with all the answers.

It’s building a circle of wise voices with different experiences, strengths, and perspectives.

Sometimes the greatest value accelerator in your business is not one mentor…

It’s the wisdom that comes from many.

Is your leadership bearing fruit or are you just blending in?

Two leaves.

At first glance, they almost look identical.
Same color.
Similar veins.
Same environment.

When I’m walking in the field behind my house surrounded by hundreds of plants, leaves, and trees, it’s hard to tell the difference. Especially during winter and early spring. For several months a year, they blend together.

But eventually, the difference becomes obvious.

One of these leaves comes from a blackberry plant. Every spring it produces fruit my granddaughters and I love to pick and eat together. It provides something valuable beyond itself. It nourishes. It creates joy. It leaves a positive impact on the people around it.

The other plant mostly produces more of itself. It spreads quickly, takes up space, and eventually becomes little more than a w**d competing for room and resources.

Jesus talked often about this idea of bearing fruit.
In Matthew 7:16, He said: “By their fruit you will recognize them.”

Not by appearances.
Not by words alone.

But by what their lives actually produce.

I think that lesson applies deeply to leadership and business.

In today’s world, it’s easy to look the part.

To blend into the crowd of CFOs, accountants, bookkeepers and business people who all appear similar from a distance.

Same titles.
Same terminology.
Same reports.
Same strategies.

But over time, fruit reveals the difference.

The leaders who truly stand apart are not the ones who simply occupy space or multiply activity. They are the ones whose work produces something meaningful for others.

They create clarity instead of confusion.
They create growth instead of dependency.
They create confidence instead of fear.
They help people, teams, and businesses become healthier and stronger.

Fruit always benefits someone beyond the plant itself.

As business leaders, are we simply growing our presence… or are we bearing fruit through our work?

Because eventually, every business leader becomes known not by how they looked from a distance, but by what they produced for the people they served.

For more than 6 years, one of my favorite traditions at Fulling Management & Accounting, Inc. has been participating in the World Vision 6K for Water.

What makes it special isn’t just the event itself.

It’s seeing our team members from all over the country participate alongside their families, friends, and communities.

Every year brings a little creativity too…

We’ve had team members complete it walking, running, riding scooters, and even involving horses along the way.

But behind the fun is a powerful reminder.

6K is the average distance many people in developing countries walk every single day just to access water for basic survival.

And too often, the water they collect is contaminated, spreading disease and creating ongoing health challenges for entire communities.

Through wells, sanitation improvements, and hygiene education, World Vision is helping provide access to clean water in areas that desperately need it.

This year, approximately 440 teams across the United States raised over $1.65 million — helping bring clean water access to more than 33,000 people.

That’s the amazing thing about collective action. It can make positive impact.

What happens when life interrupts your plans… and slowly, quietly, you start to drift?

Over the past few weeks, our team has been reflecting on powerful teaching from Christine Caine around identity, purpose, and intentional living—and it’s led to some honest conversations about burnout, motivation, and what it really takes to stay grounded.

From recognizing “drift” in our priorities and culture, to learning how easily we can lose sight of our “why,” these discussions have challenged us in the best way.

If you’ve ever felt unmoored in work or life, this one’s for you.

Read the full reflections on the blog.

The older I get, the more I realize great leadership and great storytelling have a lot in common. Both require vulnerability.

Recently, our family gathered in southern Indiana for a picnic. Burgers on the grill. Co****le in the yard. Kids running around. Lawn chairs slowly forming a circle as cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandkids settled in for the evening.

And then Uncle Ron started telling stories.

He’s one of those rare storytellers who can make you laugh so hard your stomach hurts. He shared stories from growing up as the youngest of 10 kids on a farm — stories involving mischief, close calls, and apparently a first-name relationship with the local sheriff’s department.

Even though I’ve heard many of those stories before, they somehow get better every time he tells them.

But what struck me most wasn’t the humor.

It was the shift.

Almost without warning, the laughter gave way to something deeper. Ron began talking about a recent medical diagnosis that left him wondering if he would ever walk again. He described the physical pain, the uncertainty, the anxiety, and the helplessness that came with it.

The circle got quiet.

Not awkward quiet.
Connected quiet.

Thankfully, after more testing and many prayers, the diagnosis proved incorrect and he made a full recovery.

But sitting there listening, I was reminded of something important about leadership:

It’s easy to lead when the stories are wins.

The promotion.
The fun vacation.
The successful business.
The record-breaking quarter.

Those stories inspire people.

But the stories that truly connect people are often the hard ones.

The season when cash flow was tight.
The marriage that needed help.
The anxiety no one saw behind the confident exterior.
The failure you thought might define you.
Vulnerability doesn’t weaken leadership.
It humanizes it.

And in many cases, it gives other people permission to stop pretending they’re the only ones struggling.

People rarely connect through perfection.
They connect through honesty.

As leaders, the stories we choose to tell shape the culture around us.

Not every story needs a polished ending.
But authenticity has a way of building trust faster than success ever will.

What stories are you telling?

What if your biggest leadership advantage isn’t getting people to work like you… but learning how to lead people who don’t?

We’ve been digging into a powerful conversation on leadership, trust, and the EARN framework—and it’s changing how we think about building strong teams.

If you lead people (or want to), this is worth the read.

The strongest teams aren’t built on similarity—they’re built on understanding. In a recent team discussion inspired by How to Lead People Who Are Not Like You by Stephanie Chung, one idea stood out: leadership today isn’t about getting people to fit a mold. It’s about learning how to unloc...

Do your employees feel like a weight…or an opportunity for impact?

How you answer that question shows up in everything:
-Your tone.
-Your decisions.
-Your culture.

Many business owners say: “I have to make payroll.”

But the shift is this: “I get to impact lives.”

Same business.
Different leader.

Here’s the tension:

If your team feels like weight…
you’ll manage them.

If your team feels like a gift…
you’ll lead them.

So I’m curious—Which one feels more true for you right now: burden or blessing?
