The IRS is sounding the alarm on a surge of fraudulent tax schemes circulating online. Misleading posts are encouraging taxpayers to misuse credits – often resulting in denied refunds and steep penalties.
📉 Since 2022, over 32,000 penalties have been issued, totaling more than $162 million.
⚠️ Claims based on false eligibility can lead to fines of up to $5,000.
📌 Many of these credits are intended for specific groups, such as self-employed individuals — not the general public.
James Clifford, Director of Return Integrity and Compliance Services at the IRS, puts it plainly: “These schemes are not only misleading but can cost taxpayers dearly.”
âś… Key takeaway: Always verify your tax guidance through trusted professionals or official IRS resources.
