Does this sound familiar?
"A client asked me to do something that was out of scope for our contract. I felt guilty about the level of service I was providing to them recently, which led me to not charge extra for the additional work."
This is a great example of a situation when our mindset gets in the way of making money.
It also might look like avoiding sending invoices or following up on outstanding invoices for fear of bothering your client.
The good news, you can work on that mindset and create a different result for yourself!

It's a bittersweet day around here! We say goodbye to Drue as she heads off to a full-time job at Deloitte.
Back in November 2021, in order to grow and provide the types of services that we do now, I knew I needed help.
But that knowledge was also met with some fears, what if I hire the wrong person, can someone else take care of clients the way I do, and can I even afford it?
Some of those fears I could answer with data and others took a leap of faith.
That leap turned out to be one of the best things I have done for the business!
Drue has been a rockstar!
Hiring a college student, which was part of the mission to be able to impact the next generation of accountants, came with knowing at some point she would move on.

This story is becoming too common during discovery calls:
I have a QuickBooks file (and maybe even a bookkeeper) and someone prepares my tax return, yet, I don't understand my finances! I am told I need to pay $x amount of taxes but don't know why. I am working hard and it feels like there is no cash left. This stresses me out and I just want to understand it better.
First, I am sorry that has been your experience.
Second, please know it doesn't have to be this way. Not all CPAs are the same. Some are very analytical, can build amazing spreadsheets with calculation and enjoy reading the tax code. Others have the heart of a teacher and are better at making complex things simple for you to understand. Some have a large number of clients and aren't as available to answer questions and help you plan. Others keep a smaller client roster to allow them to proactively communicate and be available when you have questions.
Interview multiple CPAs, ask questions, listen to your gut on whether you feel empowered or more lost after a meeting with your accountant.

Can you think of a situation where you got stuck in a cycle of not knowing or understanding something?
Maybe your business finances?!?!
When we break it down there are two main thought paths we can take that lead to opposite results:
1) Thoughts that lead to feeling excited, empowered, and capable of learning. Therefore we take action steps to learn, ask for help, and accept being a beginner. This leads to results of learning and moving forward in our journey.
OR
2) Thoughts that cause us to feel overwhelmed, incapable, unsure, and hopeless. Therefore we don't take action steps or we become paralyzed. This leads to results of remaining where we are and we continue to not know or understand.
Here is an example for you:
There was a moment where I chose different thoughts that led me to actually becoming a horse owner. I didn't grow up around horses other than the occasional trip to an extended family farm. When I compared myself to someone further along in the horse journey, I easily found myself lost in how it would ever be possible for me.
And then I decided to embrace being a beginner and surrounded myself with people I could learn from. I figured out the necessary items and accepted this journey would be getting started with a 1970s big green trailer. It gets the job that I need at this stage done.

I’m Sheila. And I did the whole office-environment, dress-up-every-day, work-extra-long-hours-during-tax-season, Public Accounting Firm gig until it all became too much and left me thinking there had to be more to life. Don’t get me wrong - I loved what I was doing, but I was doing it all on someone else’s terms. And that was a challenge for me.
I found my niche with small business owners, especially those in service related industries like myself.

I know that starting out you can feel overwhelmed and lost, so after some inspiration from a great group of blogging friends, I decided to put together my online course, Accounting Basics for Small Business. August 2018, Sheila Hansen LLC entered the online course world and expanded the offerings for its clients.
The drive behind my small business, first and foremost, has been my family and having time to spend with them making memories that will last a lifetime. My clients become part of my life and the work I do for them leaves me feeling valued and fulfilled at the end of the day. But if I am being totally honest with you, a lot of my business decisions are made based on my dream of owning a horse. This city girl moved to the country and someday soon, I will wake up to look out and see a horse on my property.
