For decades, the focus was on accumulating. Saving, building, preparing. Retirement flips that dynamic.

Suddenly, the goal is to draw on what you’ve built, coordinate multiple income sources, and balance today’s spending with what’s ahead. Life expectancy data suggests many retirees may spend 20 or more years in this next chapter.

That’s not a footnote. It’s the whole story.

The early years of retirement are worth being intentional about. The routines you establish, the way you approach your time and your finances, tend to set the tone for what follows.

That’s something worth talking about.

One of the biggest changes in retirement isn’t financial. It’s social. Work provides structure, sure. But it also provides community. Colleagues, shared goals, and a reason to be somewhere at a specific time.

When that falls away, many retirees find themselves rebuilding their social lives from the ground up. Community groups, volunteer organizations, and new social circles often fill the gaps, but it takes time.

Research shows that more than one-quarter of adults age 65 and older volunteer each year. That’s not a coincidence. For many people, contributing to something larger is part of what makes retirement feel meaningful. If you’re navigating this transition, you’re not alone.

The first year of retirement brings a shift that’s bigger than most people expect. Your schedule opens up.

Your income sources change.

The rhythms you’ve built over decades are replaced by something new and unwritten.

For many retirees, that first year is less a finish line and more a starting point. It’s a chance to experiment with routines, revisit long-postponed interests, and figure out what this next chapter actually looks like for you.

This week, we’re breaking down what that transition often looks like in real terms. Follow along for the full picture.

See that yellow section? That’s money you didn’t have to save. Your money created it for you.

This is compound interest at work. If you invest $1,000 a year and earn a hypothetical 5% return, by year 30 you’re close to $70,000. The most powerful part isn’t what you put in—it’s the interest quietly earning more interest over time.

Year 1: almost no interest at all.
Year 30: the interest on your interest alone might cover a year of car payments (or more).

You don’t need to constantly do more. You need to stay consistent with a strategy that fits your life. What’s one money habit you wish you’d started earlier?

As the school year comes to a close, a quick reminder worth sharing:
If you or someone in your family is currently in school — or heading back this fall — now is the time to make sure the FAFSA has been submitted.

A few things worth knowing:
⏰ The federal deadline is June 30. State and school deadlines are often earlier.
⏰ Many types of aid are first-come, first-served. Waiting could cost money.
⏰ You can make corrections after submission, but the form needs to be in first.

It’s an important step that can have a meaningful impact on college funding and planning. Don't let a deadline get in the way of money that's already available to you.

I wanted to share an upcoming educational event on April 14th that may be helpful for anyone navigating cognitive changes—either personally or with a loved one. It’s focused on The Dementia Care Path: From Early Signs to Ongoing Support and is presented by Agemark Senior Living and Its Communities in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association – Nebraska Chapter.

The Women Building Wealth Series is a thoughtfully designed collection of online and in person workshops created to spark meaningful conversations about money and investing—at no cost to you.

For many women, Social Security provides a foundational layer of guaranteed income that lasts as long as you live. Because women tend to live longer, experience career pauses, or earn less over time, Social Security often plays an outsized role in long-term financial stability.

You will gain a clear understanding of how Social Security benefits work, including how you qualify, key considerations for when to begin taking benefits, and practical strategies for maximizing the lifetime value of your benefits. You'll leave the session better equipped to make informed, confident decisions about Social Security as part of your broader financial plan.
